Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a sequel to Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s live-action blockbuster hit starring Margot Robbie as the primary Barbie protagonist. Despite Gerwig’s initial resistance to returning for a hypothetical Barbie 2, it seemed inevitable that Warner Bros. would pursue a franchise – especially after the first film grossed a record-breaking $1.4 billion worldwide. If there must be a Barbie sequel (there mustn’t), at least Gerwig is involved.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach have “hatched an idea” for a sequel that’s said to be in the early stages at Warner Bros. It’s unclear if Gerwig would return to direct in addition to script-writing duties. When reached for a comment, a rep for Gerwig and Baumbach said, “There is no legitimacy to this reporting.” A rep for Warner Bros. called THR’s report “inaccurate.”
Released in 2023 and based on the iconic Mattel toy line, Barbie follows the title character (Margot Robbie) on a hilarious and heartfelt journey from the pastel world of Barbieland – populated by every version of Barbie, Ken, and their various pals – to the real world. With Ken (Ryan Gosling) in tow, Barbie discovers that women aren’t as empowered in the human world, while a boneheaded Ken is inspired to commandeer Barbie’s Dream House and turn Barbieland into Ken-Land. While it’s not the most nuanced take on feminism and empowerment, Barbie proved that massive blockbusters based on storied IP don’t have to be brainless or pander to one demographic (men who miss their toys).
