Darren Aronofsky Hopes to Work with Chris Hemsworth on New Project

After collaborating on the Disney+ series Limitless with Chris Hemsworth, Darren Aronofsky wants to cast the Thor star in a feature film.

After putting Brendan Fraser into the Oscar conversation with The Whale, perhaps Darren Aronofsky will have Chris Hemsworth leading his next film. Aronofsky, whose previous films include titles like Black Swan and The Wrestler, also collaborated with Hemsworth on the series Limitless with Chris Hemsworth. The National Geographic documentary series is executive produced by Aronofsky and follows Hemsworth putting himself through extreme physical challenges to help viewers better understand aging and mortality.

The two hit it off well, as Aronofsky now wants to team back up with Hemsworth on a new project. Per Variety, Aronofsky glowed about his time working with Hemsworth, feeling that the two came out of that project with a great appreciation for one another. This has the two hoping to work together on something else as well, and Aronofsky says he’s now trying to make this happen, though they’re waiting to find the perfect project to bring them back together. As Aronofsky explains:

“I love him and I think he loves me. I think he’s a great human being and a gentleman and a great parent. He’s really an inspiration to me. And so I would love to work with him again. We’re trying to find the right piece.”

But don’t think Thor 5 could be that project. Aronofsky also insisted that he’s not looking to direct a Thor movie, even if he tried to develop a Batman film at one point that never got off the ground. In any case, Hemsworth may be popping up in whatever movie comes next for Aronofsky after The Whale, given how much the two want to reunite.

While Aronofsky has Hemsworth on board and is looking for the right film to use him in, it was an opposite situation with The Whale. The new movie has been planned for a decade with Aronofsky considering virtually every actor in Hollywood, but no one really seemed to fit. He eventually happened to see footage of Fraser in a trailer, leading to the casting as it clicked that this was the person he’d been looking for.

In a new recent chat, Aronofsky also said how important Fraser’s casting in The Whale had been. Given the Oscar buzz, it was clearly the right decision, and as far as the director sees it, it was a casting that “needed to happen.”

“I just couldn’t figure out the character of Charlie,” Aronofsky said, noting how his failure to find the right actor delayed the movie’s production. “There was nothing that really excited me to get out of bed and fight for it. Then Brendan came along, and that was one of those aha moments. I had never thought of him [for the role]. It was a pretty cool idea, and he was a super sweet guy, and clearly very hungry to take something. That’s where it began.”
