David Corenswet’s ‘Star Wars’ Watch Order Is Insane

David Corenswet’s ‘Star Wars’ Watch Order Is Insane

David Corenswet is leading one of the biggest science fiction films of the summer with the titular role in Superman, but he can’t stop talking about another sci-fi franchise. The actor loves Star Wars to the point where he starts Return of the Jedi at the right moment every New Year’s Eve so he can watch the second Death Star explode at midnight. He almost beats Henry Cavill as the nerdiest actor to portray Superman.

No one’s really a fan of Star Wars until they have a piping-hot take about the ginormous franchise. David Corenswet proved he was a true fan when he delivered his take on the proper watch order for the series on Brittany Broski’s Royal Court podcast. The actor said he places the prequel trilogy in the middle of the original trilogy, and while he has some bright ideas about the order, we don’t quite agree.

David Corenswet Splits Up the Original Trilogy

Warner Bros.

David Corenswet rewatches the Star Wars movies every year. The time he’s spent thinking about the movies has led to his own unique approach to how they should be viewed, especially for people who are new to the series. The actor believes that episodes four and five, A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, should be watched first. He says they should be followed by the three prequel films, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. The series is then concluded with Return of the Jedi. Corenswet shared this watch order with Brittany Broski on her podcast Royal Court, and she responded by calling the actor “crazy.” However, Corenswet had a surprisingly thoughtful response to justify his answer:

“You preserve the twist of — spoiler alert — Darth Vader is [Luke’s] father … And then you watch one through three as a flashback essentially. And then six is, it’s not as strong as four and five as a film, but it’s a great culmination to the whole thing. It brings it all together. The stakes are bigger if you’ve seen one through three. It feels more like a saga.

Although his watch order is unconventional, we have to admit that David Corenswet’s reasoning does make sense. Putting the prequels in between episodes five and six helps set up why Darth Vader turns away from the dark side. It’s also a good watch order for people who don’t know that Darth Vader is Luke’s father (does anyone not know that already?), and at that point, they should just watch the prequel trilogy first if they want the background. The original trilogy and prequel trilogy have such different looks and styles that switching back and forth between them would be too hard to watch.

2

Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back

There Are Only 2 Correct Ways to Watch the ‘Star Wars’ Series

20th Century-Fox

The winding timelines in the Star Wars series have led to many debates among fans about the proper order for watching the films. Even though Obi-Wan Kenobi said, “Only a Sith deals in absolutes,” there are only two reasonable ways of watching the Star Wars series. The options are watching the films in order of release date and watching the films in chronological order based on the in-universe time periods. Watching the films based on release date allows viewers to get a sense of how the franchise developed over time. Meanwhile, chronological order allows viewers to have a fuller understanding of how the characters develop over time, with the prequels setting up for Anakin’s redemption before viewers even know that he’s Darth Vader.

Star Wars: The 11 Best Moments in the Prequel Trilogy

The Star Wars prequels have provided some of the best moments from any story in the galaxy far, far away.

Both options were equally reasonable for a while until Disney went overboard with Star Wars content. In the past decade, the company has released films and shows that come before and after the original trilogy in no particular order. To watch all of Star Wars with Disney films and shows in order of release date would become a huge task, forcing viewers to frequently flip between different periods within the galaxy. While release order might be ideal for the original trilogy and prequel trilogy, chronological order makes a lot more sense when shows and other movies are included in the conversation.

David, We’d Love to See You in a ‘Star Wars’ Movie

20th Century Fox

While doing press for Superman, David Corenswet revealed that he’d love to be in his own Star Wars movie. In a segment for Vanity Fair, Corenswet and Superman co-star Nicholas Hoult were taking a lie-detector test when Star Wars came up. Hoult asked Corenswet if the actor would rather play Superman again in a sequel or appear as a Jedi Knight in the Star Wars universe. Corenswet said that even though he’s already set to appear as the superhero again, he’d choose Star Wars. He also said that since he loves aviation, he’d rather play an X-Wing pilot than a Jedi.

He might be the perfect Superman, but now we’re desperate to see Corenswet in the Star Wars universe as well. The films and shows are always introducing new force-wielding characters, so maybe he could show up in one of those. Or, if Patty Jenkins ever gets to make her Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie, he could be an X-Wing pilot in that. He didn’t suggest it, but he’d also be perfect as one of the many charming smugglers in the universe, much like Han Solo and Lando Calrissian.
