Dominion Director Reveals the Most Challenging Dinosaurs to Develop

Jurassic World: Dominion includes more dinosaurs than any other Jurassic movie, but they weren’t all easy to bring to life on screen.

Jurassic World: Dominion may not have struck a chord with critics but as the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year after just one week on release, it seems that audiences don’t care and just want to see dinosaurs back on the big screen. Thankfully, that is something that Colin Trevorrow’s finale of the Jurassic World trilogy delivers in numbers. According to the stats, along with 17 types of dinosaur making a return in the movie, there were an additional 10 that made their debut in the movie. Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast, Trevorrow talked about which of the prehistoric beasts was the most challenging to bring to life on screen. He said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“The Pyroraptors were really hard and were the ones that took the longest to develop, because we didn’t really have any baseline for it. We had to understand how feathers reacted to wind, ice water and all of these other elements.”

Jurassic World: Dominion finally brought into the franchise some dinosaurs that went back to their factual roots. The appearance of some dinosaurs has always caused debate as discoveries of the last few decades have proven that many species of dinosaur, including the T-Rex, are now believed to have had small feathers on their bodies. This has been seen in a number of dinosaurs in the new movie, but some old favorites that are explained to be the same dinosaurs to feature in the original Jurassic Park retained their historical inaccuracies. One of those was the Dilophosaurus.

“I was very reserved with that one…having solely seen it as an animatronic, and never digitally animated,” Trevorrow explained. “So we didn’t have a digital model. We used only the animatronic. We were limited to what it could do, but I think the limitations of what animatronics can do are part of what makes that character scary. It just kind of stares at you from a stationary spot. And then suddenly it’s right in front of you. When it’s there, it’s horribly nasty.”

Jurassic World: Dominion Had A Huge Opening Weekend

Universal Pictures

According to the critics, Jurassic World: Dominion is the worst movie in the entire Jurassic Saga, scraping in just a 30% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes. Naturally, audiences have reacted better to the movie, and that led to a monstrous opening weekend that beat most predictions. Now Jurassic World: Dominion is already the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year at the worldwide box office after just one week since its debut. Whether the audience numbers remain high during its second weekend will be seen over the next few days.

Jurassic World: Dominion has had the benefit of being the last movie in a huge franchise, delivering some spectacular visuals and also leaning heavily into the nostalgia of the franchise by bringing back Jurassic Park’s Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum. There are also plenty of callbacks to the entire franchise for those who like that kind of thing, which when added together makes for a big summer blockbuster that may not always make sense, but delivers the kind of thrills the big screen was made for.
