Donnie Yen’s Action Epic ‘Ip Man’ Finds Free Streaming Success

Action and martial arts icon Donnie Yen
continues to thrill audiences all over the globe, and one of his best movies is now finding renewed success on free streaming. Released back in 2008, Yen takes the lead in Ip Man, which tells the story of the Wing Chun grandmaster who would go on to teach the legendary Bruce Lee. Detailing Ip Man’s early life during the Sino-Japanese War, and his battles with going outside of tradition, Ip Man has now entered the top 10 on free streaming service Tubi
, as fans tune in to watch the unmatched skills of the John Wick star.

Directed by Wilson Yip and starring Donnie Yen as the title character alongside Simon Yam, Lynn Hung, Lam Ka-tung, Xing Yu, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, and Tenma Shibuya, Ip Man features martial arts choreography by fellow genre icon Sammo Hung. The movie was met with rave reviews upon release, and now stands at 86% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an even more impressive 93% from audiences on the Popcornmeter.

“At once beholden to the established conventions of the genre and delightfully subversive of them, Ip Man is one of the most exciting — and refreshingly character-driven — martial arts films in years,” the critics’ consensus reads. The Ip Man franchise has become one of Yen’s most successful. The last we saw of the series was in 2019’s Ip Man 4: The Finale. However, as it turns out, calling it The Finale turned out to be a little hasty, with Yen revealing back in 2023 that a fifth outing is now in the works.

Donnie Yen Is All Set To Lead His Own ‘John Wick’ Spin-off

While Donnie Yen has been plying his action trade for many years, he recently came onto the radar of fans in the Western world thanks to his scene-stealing performance as the blind assassin Caine in 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4. A former friend-turned-enemy of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, the role allowed Yen to show off his effortless charisma and action movie prowess (including that stunning chain punch), something that many action fans have known about for years, with Caine quickly stealing the show from a movie brimming with stellar performances and captivating characters.

The action icon must use his particular set of skills to find out why he was framed for murder in this wuxia epic.

Yen quickly expressed his desire to return for a spin-off. Thankfully, he got his wish, with the movie being officially confirmed to be in development back in May last year. The Caine solo movie is now in the works, with Yen revealing recently in a conversation with Collider that he is hoping to both direct and star in the action movie.

“I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we’ll see. I don’t know, Steve. I can only tell you that much. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We’ll see what happens.”

While we await the Caine movie and Ip Man 5, Donnie Yen has found success both behind and in front of the camera in the action thriller The Prosecutor, which now boasts a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
