Dune Part 2 Release Officially Delayed to 2024 Due to Hollywood Strikes

Dune Part 2 Release Officially Delayed to 2024 Due to Hollywood Strikes

Summary

  • Dune: Part Two, the highly anticipated sequel, has been delayed until March 2024 due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, impacting the film’s marketing and promotional efforts.
  • The strike has also affected other projects in Hollywood, including TV shows and films such as Captain America: Brave New World and Fantastic Four, causing delays and potential impact on box office performance.
  • The lack of promotion and attendance from stars at premieres and interviews has already impacted the box office performance of films like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, potentially losing 15% of its possible gross.

Dune: Part Two is the latest victim of the current crisis in Hollywood. After several weeks of rumors about the potential delay of the film due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Warner Bros. Pictures has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated Denis Villeneuve-directed sequel won’t be hitting theaters on December 22 as originally planned.

Per Variety, the next movie in the franchise based on Frank Herbert’s acclaimed novels will be now arriving on March 15, 2024, almost three months later than its planned Christmas release. The delay has been instigated due to the lack of movement in both the writer’s and actor’s strikes in Hollywood, and considering no agreement seems likely in the near future, actors would be unable to have promoted the movie in the run-up to its release. Even for a big movie like Dune: Part Two, that could have a massive impact on the performance of the theatrical run of the film.

Dune: Part 2 stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Charlotte Rampling and Javier Bardem, all reprising their roles from the first part. Joining them will be Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Souheila Yacoub, and Tim Blake Nelson.

How the Crisis in Hollywood Is Impacting the Industry

Paramount Pictures

Dune: Part 2 is not the only project that has been affected by the ongoing situation in Hollywood. While several TV shows like Stranger Things, The Last of Us, and Cobra Kai are not able to complete work on the scripts for upcoming seasons, movies like Captain America: Brave New World, Fantastic Four, and Kraven the Hunter have already seen their release dates pushed back by a number of months.

Films like Blue Beetle and The Haunted Mansion recently hit theaters despite the strike, but with no stars attending the premieres or doing any interviews to promote the projects since the SAG-AFTRA strike rules won’t allow it. And this is, of course, impacting box office performance.

The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed the consequences of the strikes on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, one of the most anticipated animated movies of the year. According to the outlet and its multiple sources, the potential gross of the movie was likely impacted to the tune of a 15% reduction in revenue thanks to a lack of direct promotion. Obviously, it is reports such as this that will have studios considering which other movies should be delayed to avoid underperforming at the box office and losing profits.

Until the second Dune is out, you can watch the first film on Max (and the David Lynch Dune from 1984 on Netflix).
