Gerard Butler Action Movie ‘Plane’ Flies High Streaming on Netflix

Gerard Butler has found a niche in the world of mid-budget, white-knuckle thrillers, and one of his recent efforts is now soaring on Netflix. Having landed on the platform just a few days ago, Butler is now heading straight to the top of the chart and could very well dislodge Tyler Perry’s latest divisive hit, STRAW, from the number one spot.

Netflix has become a home to many blistering action movies recently, and while it is hard to predict which will become huge hits and which will remain grounded, Gerard Butler has become one of those stars who can sell an action movie by name alone. His Has Fallen series of movies have been incredibly successful in action circles, and the same goes for his Den of Thieves franchise, which returned with a belated sequel recently to strong reviews and the promise of a third movie coming soon.

However, right now on Netflix, many fans of Butler’s brand of action are tuning into the high-flying actioner that comes with the synopsis of, “After a heroic job of successfully landing his storm-damaged aircraft in a war zone, a fearless pilot finds himself between the agendas of multiple militias planning to take the plane and its passengers hostage.”

10 Underrated Gerard Butler Movies That Are Worth Revisiting

Gerard Butler has more hits than he could ever ask for. Still, some of his good films remain unknown.

For those who haven’t worked it out, the movie is Plane – a film with a title so simple it makes Google-searching a nightmare. One-time (and possible returnee) Marvel star Mike Colter co-stars with Butler in a film that gained decent critical reviews, but excelled when it came to pleasing the most important people – cinema audiences. The movie holds a Tomatometer score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a hugely impressive 94% Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Is ‘Plane’ Getting a Sequel or Not?

Lionsgate

Just like many hit action movies before it, Plane did not take long to announce that it would be getting a sequel, and both Butler and Colter will be onboard – which is a very knowing choice of words considering the sequel will be entitled Ship. Personally, I cannot wait for Train, Car, and Scooter to follow, but for now, Ship will have to do… when it finally gets its engines firing.

In a recent update from Colter, the film has already suffered several delays, but is still happening. There are just a few small hurdles in the way right now. He said last month:

“The status on that is that it was a thing that happened during the strike. They were supposed to be following through on it [then the strike happened]. There’s things going on. Obviously, Gerard and his company that produce that, they own the rights to it. So that’s a question for them moving it forward, because I got things going on. I’m sure he’s got things going on too, he’s shooting stuff. But I’d love to do the sequel, but it’s kind of in their ball park right now. It’s another thing to pray for.”

Ship will pick up directly from the final act of Plane, and for those who have seen the movie, this will make perfect sense. For everyone else, do yourself a favor and check out the movie on Netflix now.
