Honor Among Thieves Directors Didn’t “Lay Seeds” For A Sequel, But Have Many Ideas.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has been doing the unthinkable and gaining a huge amount of praise from its early screenings. The film will go on general release at the end of the month, and if it can manage to keep that positive word of mouth going, it could be the start of a movie franchise that the table top RPG has wanted for a long time. While there is already an unrelated TV series in the works, Honor Among Thieves’ directors have been discussing direct sequels for their movie, even though they apparently didn’t build any teases into the feature.

While many movies are released with built-in post-credits scenes that set-up a potential sequel should the green light be given, as well as laying a trail of where a sequel could go throughout the main story, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley didn’t do that with their movie. Despite that though, they believe there are many places for a sequel to go. On the red carpet at the film’s premiere, Goldstein told ComicBook.com:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“We didn’t plant any seeds, but if we’re lucky enough to make another one, then I think there’s so many places to go. We’ve created these great characters who we would love to see where they are in a year or two.”

Even ahead of its release, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has seemingly won the battle and defeated its biggest antagonist – the opinions of the critics. Whether it can also win over audiences will be its final challenge later this month.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Has Already Spilled Many of its Secrets

When it comes to movie adaptations, developing a successful D&D movie has proven much trickier in the past than even adapting video games. With a five-decade legacy to uphold, avid fans to please and general audiences to entertain, it is hard to completely comprehend the challenge faced by Daley and Goldstein to make Honor Among Thieves a success.

However, the most recent TV spot for the movie continued a worrying movie trend of giving away too many secrets ahead of the film’s release. While the several trailers and teasers released so far have shown plenty of monsters, dragons, undead and magic, the latest spot “spoiled” an Easter egg moment for fans of the 1980s animated Dungeons & Dragons series, with the characters of that show appearing in the same arena as the movie’s band of adventurers.

Although this marketing ploy is meant to get more people into theaters when the movie eventually arrives on March 31, it could also have the problem of revealing too much and leaving people with a sense of having seen many of the major surprises before they even set foot in the cinema. Hopefully, this is not the case, as the movie does seem to have struck an impressive balance between Marvel-style action and humor, while bringing the essence of the Dungeons & Dragons world to life in a way that both fans and non-fans can enjoy.
