How ‘Novocaine’ Redefines the Action Comedy Genre

After portraying the insufferable and sinister male protagonist of Companion earlier this year, Jack Quaid continues his hot streak in Paramount’s action-comedy, Novocaine. Playing quite the opposite of his Companion character, Quaid plays a socially awkward 30-year-old assistant bank manager named Nathan Caine who has a rare condition that leaves him unable to feel physical pain. After finally working up the courage to go out with a woman he works with, she is soon kidnapped by bank robbers when they take her hostage. Using his condition to his advantage, he decides to go after the bank robbers to save her.

Quaid is effortlessly charming as Nathan Caine, once again showing the world that he is movie-star material. In less than two months, he has portrayed two vastly different characters with ease. He also proved that not only can he handle the action genre, but he excels at it. He makes it easy to root for Nathan and hope that he gets his happy ending. While this is certainly an action comedy, it brings fresh ideas to the table that set it apart from other movies in the genre. Novocaine builds on common aspects of action and adds less common elements that make it stand out. It revitalized the genre, and we’re breaking down how.

The Protagonist Is an Average Guy With a Disability

Nathan Caine is an ordinary guy. He’s an everyman who is also rather shy and reclusive because of his rare condition. Nathan lives with Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis (CIPA), a rare genetic disorder that is caused by genetic mutations that prevent the proper function of nerve cells. Since his disability doesn’t allow him to feel the sensation of physical pain, he lives his life in fear that he might do something that could potentially kill him, and he wouldn’t even know it. So, he alternates between his job as the assistant manager of a bank and playing video games at home. He doesn’t go out, and he liquifies his food because he worries he may bite his tongue off without knowing.

Aside from his condition, Nathan is a regular guy. He works a rather mundane job and has common hobbies such as gaming and reading. He drives a sedan and makes friends with the online gaming community. Since his condition prevents him from being adventurous, Nathan is about as average as one can get. He is the complete opposite of the typical action hero seen in movies like this. He isn’t fearless, he isn’t overly muscular, and he cares about the consequences of his actions. Nathan is just a typical guy caught in an atypical situation that finally gives him a reason to be content with his condition.

The Movie’s Heart Is Romance

Plenty of movies feature a protagonist who goes on a dangerous journey to save someone they love, and it’s an especially common trope in action movies. Nathan does that in Novocaine, but for him, this is unlike anything he has ever done. Not just because he isn’t a violent person, but because he hasn’t really lived a life outside his job and his apartment. He had lived his life in fear that his CIPA would be the death of him, so he chose to live a very simple, uneventful life. Even going out to Sherry’s (Amber Midthunder) art gallery was a big deal for him. His journey to getting Sherry back is probably the most active he’s ever been, and it’s because he decided to put love first.

The romance between Nathan and Sherry develops quickly as it’s revealed Nathan has had a crush on her for the entire four months she worked there. Nathan falls for her fearless nature fast, and his awkwardness is actually what draws Sherry in. The morning after their first date, Nathan is happier than he’s ever been and even tries solid food again, something he never would have done without Sherry. She has changed his entire view on the life he can live, which is what makes him even consider going after the thieves who kidnapped her. The romance between Nathan and Sherry is what propels the story forward. Without it, Novocaine wouldn’t have any emotional strings to make you care for these characters.

It’s an Action Movie for Horror Fans

While the heart of this film is the recently developed romance between Nathan and Sherry, it is still an action-comedy, and a gory one at that. Since Nathan can’t feel pain, he can withstand some serious injuries that would send most people running for the hills. On the flip side of that, he is also able to dish out injuries because he won’t feel the repercussions of getting into physical fights. Some of the kills are brutal, including one involving a broken arm bone impaling someone from the chin and up through the top of the head. Blood, broken bones, burnt body parts, and eyes impaled with glass are just a few examples of the gore found in Novocaine.

‘Novocaine’ Ending, Explained: Who Survives and How?

Jack Quaid’s new action comedy, ‘Novocaine,’ has him playing a banker who can’t feel pain. Here’s what to know about the film’s ending.

In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Jack Quaid said that while Novocaine is not by any means a horror movie, it is an action movie for horror fans. Quaid noted that the excess gore and violence make it a movie that horror fans would likely enjoy. To contrast the violence, he said he wanted to make sure Nathan was a “cupcake of a human being”. The naturally caring nature of Nathan in comparison to the ruthlessness of the situation he has found himself in adds to the horror-esque elements the movie has going for it, especially because Nathan is not a person who would normally respond well to gore or violent situations.
