J.K. Simmons Believes He’ll Return as J. Jonah Jameson in More Spider-Man Movies

J.K. Simmons is confident that Marvel fans have not seen the last of Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson.

The next time we get a live-action Spider-Man movie in theaters, there’s a good chance J.K. Simmons will be back once again as J. Jonah Jameson, the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Bugle. It was back in the original Spider-Man movie trilogy directed by Sam Raimi when fans were first treated to Simmons in the role, a decision that remains one of the most perfect casting choices in comic book movie history.

J. Jonah Jameson was not featured in Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield. That might be in part due to the difficulties in finding another actor who could come close to matching what Simmons did with the role. This has been rectified by bringing back Simmons as JJJ in Spider-Man: No Way Home, even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe an Raimi’s Spider-Man films are of different movie universes. In a new interview with Deadline, Simmons opened up on his return in No Way Home which had come as a total shock to him in a pleasant way.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“It’s obviously a huge blessing and particularly that character, you know, I’d show up for – depending on the film, three days, maybe a couple of weeks – and pepper in my comic relief thing, which we had such a great time with in Sam’s original trilogy. He always gave us the latitude to improvise and play around and have fun. And when I wasn’t in the middle installment, the Andrew Garfield, it never occurred to me that they would call and ask for J. Jonah Jameson to come back and when they did, I was so excited and met Jon and the creative team.”

Clearly, returning as J. Jonah Jameson, even in a limited capacity, was an amazing experience for Simmons. Better yet for the actor, as he goes on to tease, he believes he’s going to return in more Spider-Man movies. At the very least, he’s keeping his “fingers crossed” for that to happen.

“It’s big fun. I feel like I get all of the fun for about one percent of the work that everybody else is putting in on those movies. I think I’m going to be in more. So, fingers crossed.”

More Live-Action Spider-Man Movies Are Inevitable, But Will Tom Holland Return?

Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios

Because Spider-Man: No Way Home has made immense amounts of money with profits continuing to pour in from the film’s theatrical run, we can be sure that new Spider-Man movies are on the way. Spidey producers have said their desire is for Tom Holland to return in another movie trilogy, but as of now, the actor has not officially signed on for any new sequels. He has teased that he’ll likely return for more movies, but he has also said there’s a chance he might be moving on.

In any case, it seems likely that J.K. Simmons will be back if J. Jonah Jameson ends up returning. That holds true even if the next live-action Spider-Man movie reboots the films once again. The fans have shown that they don’t mind if it’s different versions of the character living in variant universes, so long as it’s Simmons back in the role.
