James Gunn Addresses Fan Worries Over Humor Levels in His DC Universe Reboot

Summary

  • James Gunn assures fans that the tone of the new DC Universe will vary from project to project, reflecting the unique sensibilities of the filmmakers involved.
  • Superman: Legacy aims to offer a fresh perspective on the superhero, exploring his personal journey and inner conflicts while embodying virtues like truth, justice, and the American way.
  • Other exciting projects in the DCU lineup include Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, and a Wonder Woman prequel series titled Paradise Lost.

In early 2023, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed his ambitious plans for the first slate of the DC Universe reboot. Among the projects in the pipeline, Superman: Legacy takes center stage, with Gunn both writing and directing. However, concerns have arisen among fans who fear that Gunn’s frequent use of comedy in his superhero movies might overshadow the serious tone traditionally associated with DC’s characters. These concerns prompted a fan to reach out to Gunn on Instagram, inquiring whether the new DCU would resemble his previous works, such as Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad.

“Does ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 and your ‘[The] Suicide Squad’ match the style and tone you are going for in the new DCU? Will it shift much from project to project? I’m just stoked waiting to see this Superman and want to know everything you can tell us without spoilers.”

In response to the fan’s question, Gunn assured that the tone of the DC Universe would not be uniform but would vary from project to project. He emphasized that the tone and style would be influenced by the unique sensibilities of the filmmakers involved.

“It will shift from project to project and will reflect the unique sensibilities of the filmmakers involved.”

What To Expect From Superman: Legacy

DC Comics

Superman: Legacy promises to offer audiences a fresh perspective on the superhero, delving into his personal journey as he navigates the delicate balance between his extraterrestrial heritage from the planet Krypton and his humble upbringing in Smallville. The film aims to explore Superman’s growth and inner conflicts while embodying virtues like truth, justice, and the American way. In a world that often overlooks these qualities as outdated, Superman relies on human kindness to guide him, ultimately striving to reconcile the contrasting aspects of his identity and make a lasting impact on the world.

David Corenswet, known for his roles in the Netflix series such as The Politician and House of Cards, takes on the role of Clark Kent. Alongside him, Rachel Brosnahan, who recently appeared in the Prime Video series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, will be playing the spirited reporter Lois Lane. Additionally, Isabela Merced will take on the role of Hawkgirl, while Nathan Fillion will bring Guy Gardner, associated with the Green Lanterns, to life. Edi Gathegi will be joining the ranks as Mr. Terrific.

Superman: Legacy marks a significant milestone in the DCU, paving the way for a lineup of exciting projects, including Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, and a Wonder Woman prequel series titled Paradise Lost. However, Gunn recently clarified the status of these projects on social media. He emphasized that nothing within the DC Universe can be considered canon until the release of the Creature Commandos series. In his words:

“Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year – a sort of aperitif to the DCU – & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it’s okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.”

As of now, the scheduled release date for Superman: Legacy is July 11, 2025.
