While Spider-Man has been responsible for packing out theaters time and time again, Sony’s efforts to continue building a world around the villains of the Spider-Man universe have mostly been complete disappointments. While some fans are looking back on Sony’s Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films with new-found respect, Sony’s recent live-action Spider-Man endeavors have been lackluster, to say the least. With the next installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Kraven the Hunter on the horizon, director J.C. Chandor is asking fans to choke down the bad tastes of Madame Web, Morbius, and, to a much lesser extent, Venom: the Last Dance to give his film a fighting chance at the box office.
In an interview with ComicBook, Chandor talked candidly about his wishes for fans to forget about Sony’s wrong-doings of the past so that they can watch his film about the legendary trophy hunter, played by Aaron Taylor Johnson, with unbiased eyes. Really, Chandor wants to get audiences in seats to break the box office curse of Sony’s Spider-Man films, that has only been broken recently by the animated Spider-Verse films.
“People have got to give us a chance and come out and support this film, and literally try to wash away some of the other stuff that’s happened. Give our film a chance. And I think they’ll realize that we’ve done everything we can to give them a pretty fun story. You’ll see when the movie’s over, there’s potential for a lot of things to happen. But my goal was to isolate our movie, protect it, and just tell a good damn story. And then we’ll have opportunities to do a lot of fun things.
Sony’s Spider-Man Films Will Forever Live Under The Raimi Shadow
Well, the ball’s in your court, Chandor. The less cynical Spidey fans hope they’ll get a Kraven the Hunter film worth the ticket and time, but it’ll take much more than a plea to get scorned fans excited about a Sony film’s take on one of the most intimidating of the web-slinger’s villains. We could forgive the recent fumbles, but with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies still in our hearts, it’ll be hard to watch Kraven the Hunter through an unbiased lens.
As a fan of the neighborhood hero, it can be hard to forget about Sony’s first adventure into the world of Spider-Man comics, which was expertly and lovingly created by the great director Raimi. Toby McGuire’s Spider-Man made history by being one of the first modern comic book adaptations that people, fans or not, actually enjoyed, which is partly due to the amazing talent of Kirsten Dunst as the endearing Mary Jane and Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin. However, the films carried their charm and stature throughout the trilogy with the horror director introducing Doc Oc in one of the most frightening scenes in a comic book film to date.
Related Marvel Fans Divided on Kraven’s Solo Sony Movie & Live-Action Rhino
Even with a new trailer and a look at The Rhino, fans still aren’t sure what kind of film Kraven will be.
Some O.G. fans rank the Raimi films above anything Marvel has been able to produce for the web-slinger, so Chandor has some mighty big shoes to fill. However, the director seems to have a lot of faith in his film and he, along with Spider-Man fans everywhere, hope that his film truly does have the potential to brighten the future of Sony’s Marvel films. The world will make their judgments when Kraven the Hunter hits theaters on December 13.
Kraven the Hunter is the fourth movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, set in the same Marvel continuity as Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jared Leto’s Morbius. Played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the titular Kraven goes on a solo adventure as an anti-hero, this time independent of his comic book counterpart’s crusade to hunt down Peter Parker.
