The Marksman takes place on the border of Arizona and Mexico, with Neeson playing Jim Hanson, an ex-Marine turned rancher struggling with debts and his life of mundane routine. Things take a dramatic turn when he becomes the protector of a young boy called Miguel, who comes across the Mexican border, fleeing a dangerous drug cartel. Director Robert Lorenz delivers a grounded story with a brutal flair, as the film charts Jim’s attempts to take Miguel to safety in Chicago, while being constantly hounded by the cartel.

Viewers who remember Neeson’s iconic role in Taken, and have passed time with several of the actor’s other recent movies, could expect that The Marksman will play out as the usual “vengeful man on a mission to take down bad guys” story. However, Neeson manages to bring something different to his role this time around, as someone struggling with the burdens of his own past while trying to do the right thing.
At the time of its theatrical debut, The Marksman struggled to draw an audience thanks to the ongoing Covid restrictions that were in place. Despite that, the film did manage to make back its $23 million budget – something many other movies released at the time failed to achieve. It also played out just like many other Neeson movies, with critics scoring it a lowly 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it a much higher 83%, proving once again that Neeson knows what the people paying to see his movies want, and almost always delivers.
Liam Neeson Has Been Dominating Streaming Platforms

While Neeson has acknowledged that his time playing the action hero is probably coming to an end, his legacy as a late-in-life action star lives on through his movies constantly jumping from one streaming platform to another, and being a hit every time. Even though streamers are always looking for new content, there is a big audience out there who just want to see something that is familiar.
Recently, another of Neeson’s action movies, Honest Thief, scored a Top 10 win on streaming for the second time in a month, and it is hardly surprising that his movies are constantly changing hands. The main thing is that while many of his movies released in the last 20 years do not fare well with critics at all, as many slam the films as being the same old story played out again and again, there is a reason why he keeps on making them – because audiences love them.
Soon Neeson will be heading down a different kind of action role, taking on the madcap slapstick action of The Naked Gun, as he takes over the comedy franchise from the late Leslie Nielsen – who, ironically, is also charting high on the Tubi chart at the time of writing with his own action parody, Wrongfully Accused.
