Mark Hamill shared a heartfelt tribute to Star Wars creator George Lucas on his 80th birthday, recognizing the icon for his contribution to the world of film and to his own career. Lucas was the one who created the story of Luke Skywalker, and ultimately gave Hamill the biggest break anyone could ask for in Hollywood. It is therefore not a surprise that Hamill was one of the first to share his feelings on social media in celebration of Lucas’ milestone birthday.
Shared on his X/Twitter account, Hamill’s post reflected on Lucas’s incomparable influence, and how the director completely changed cinema forever with his little space movie in 1977. He wrote:
For George. You changed the world. You changed modern cinema. And you changed my life…FOREVER.
George Lucas’ Legacy in Cinema is Undeniable
George Lucas’s career really reached new heights in 1977 with the release of Star Wars. The film was a groundbreaking achievement that combined imaginative storytelling with visuals that had never been seen before on the big screen. With practical effects, gloriously fantastic costumes, and a standard of film-making that would inspire many generations of directors, writers, and actors, Lucas managed to follow up his initial movie with an even more impressive sequel in The Empire Strikes Back.
Lucas’ world-building was impeccably planned, from the various alien species, languages, and planet. However, it was the combined story of the original trilogy, which delivered one of cinema’s biggest twists in its second movie and the ultimate redemption story in its final chapter, that really set Star Wars apart from anything else around at that time. Having become an unavoidable part of everyday life, from sayings, to Jedi even being considered a religion by some, it is hard to imagine a time when Star Wars will not still be expanding its universe in new ways.

While there have been many divisive entries in Lucasfilm’s space opera, there have been just as many well-received additions that have allowed the franchise to continue to thrive. This has included the prequel and sequel trilogies, the Mandalorian saga, animated series, and countless video games and tie-in novels and comic books. No matter what new Star Wars stories are told, they always get a passionate reaction – whether good or bad.
Now, after 45 years of mostly focusing on the same period of time, the Star Wars franchise is about to begin exploring uncharted territory with its next batch of movies. While there are two Mandalorian projects heading into production soon, the franchise will be heading back 25,000 years in time to the dawn of the Jedi Order with James Mangold’s first foray into the saga, and will be taking the next steps into the future with a new movie featuring Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley).
For something that started as the brainchild of one ambitious filmmaker, in a time when the craft of making a movie relied on an ability to do a lot with a little, George Lucas proved to be someone who could do a lot indeed.
