The Games of the XX Olympiad were held in Munich, West Germany during the summer of 1972. The terrorist attack, which was carried out at the ’72 Olympics by eight members affiliated with the Palestinian militant group known as Black September, resulted in the deaths of 11 teammates from Israel’s Olympic squad and a West German police officer (per NPR). Five of the terrorists who took hostages were also killed. In 2005, Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated Munich cinematically brought the abhorrent real-life events to the big screen.

September 5 Is ‘More from the Sports People Who Were There’

While Munich (2005) doesn’t rank among Steven Spielberg’s best movies, the heart-wrenching story scores well with fans on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 83%. Spielberg’s take on the Munich massacre was nominated for a total of five Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score), but the historical drama walked away empty-handed at the 2006 Oscars ceremony. And LaRoy, Texas star John Magaro insists his upcoming movie September 5 “is a very different story” from Spielberg’s flick. Magaro said in the same interview with MovieWeb:

“We’ve seen Munich,
the Spielberg film. This is a very different story.
It’s more from
the sports people who were there for ABC.
They’re having to pivot from covering sports to covering that.
That’s an exciting one.
Then
I just started working on a new film here in New York that I can’t really talk about,
but I’ll tell you, it’s got a great cast, and it’s going to be a good one.”
