Paddington in Peru is still well on its way to theaters across the U.S., but fans of the family-friendly franchise will have to wait longer than originally expected. Starring Ben Whishaw reprising his leading role, the long-awaited Paddington sequel will feature fresh faces joining the beloved film series, filling in for new and old characters. While many expected it to bow out in theaters domestically in January, fans will have to wait another month before Paddington in Peru arrives at its destination.
Paddington in Peru is now set to be released nationwide on Feb. 14, 2025, just under a month after its original release date, Jan. 17. The wholesome family film may not be the most obvious choice for a Valentine’s Day movie date, but it’s hard to beat an adventure featuring the lovable speaking bear. Meanwhile, those in the U.K. have been able to go to the cinema to see Paddington 3 since Nov. 8. Waiting an extra month to see it in theaters in the U.S. is not too long of a delay, but it is quite easy to be jealous of the other side of the pond.
In addition to Whishaw voicing the titular character, Paddington in Peru stars Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Carla Tous, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Olivia Colman, and Antonio Banderas, who plays two different roles in the film. Check out the official synopsis:
“‘Paddington in Peru’ finds the beloved, marmalade-loving bear lost in the jungle on an exciting, high-stakes adventure. When Paddington discovers his beloved Aunt Lucy has gone missing from the Home for Retired Bears, he and the Brown family head to the wilds of Peru to look for her, the only clue to her whereabouts a spot marked on an enigmatic map. Determined to solve the mystery, Paddington embarks on a thrilling quest through the rainforests of the Amazon to find his aunt…and may also uncover one of the world’s most legendary treasures.”
‘Paddington in Peru’ is Already Bringing a Smile to Critics’ Faces
To no one’s surprise, Paddington in Peru received glowing reviews upon its U.K. release in early November. It currently sports a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, with most reviews praising its “heartwarming moments” despite not reaching the “magical” heights of the previous two films. The general consensus is that it may be the weakest Paddington installment yet, but that bar is so high that audiences will still find plenty of reason to love the threequel. Meanwhile, other critics were less responsive to the film, calling it “bland, forgettable” compared to its predecessors. The big leap it seems Paddington in Peru takes is moving the setting to the South American country, which only mostly paid off to some critics.
Related ‘Paddington in Peru’ Release Date Tragically Delayed, We Literally Cannot Have Nice Things
Originally set to release in January 2025, ‘Paddington in Peru’ is diverting course.
The positive reactions thus far will surely carry it towards a successful box office weekend domestically, even as it competes against Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World on Feb. 14. Despite plenty of competition, Paddington in Peru is a far lighter affair that will likely appeal to a different audience (we’ll be watching them both, mind you). For context, Paddington 2 grossed just over $40 million domestically, while grossing $186 million at the international box office. Paddington in Peru has amassed $25 million thus far in the United Kingdom, while the rest of the world patiently awaits to pull out their money to add to that amount.
