Mel Brooks promised audiences a sequel to Spaceballs in the original movie, but it never came to fruition. Until now. The announcement that Spaceballs 2 would be released in 2027 has excited fans and aroused the curiosity of believers in the Schwartz.

Spaceballs 2 is set to hit screens 40 years after the original was released. The original was a parody of Star Wars but also poked fun at movies like Aliens and Planet of the Apes. Since Spaceballs parodied so many movies about space adventures, the possibilities for what Spaceballs 2 might be about are vast.

Details about the plot and some of the other aspects of Spaceballs 2 are increasingly coming to light, all of which look promising.

‘Spaceballs 2’ Will Include Cast Members From the Original ‘Spaceballs’ Movie

Several members of the original cast are slated to return, including Brooks, who will reprise his role as Yogurt. It’s unclear what other roles Brooks might take up again since he also played President Stroob in Spaceballs.

Bill Pullman is expected to appear as Lone Star again, but his trusty sidekick, Barf, will not be in Spaceballs 2. In Spaceballs, Barf was played by John Candy, who passed away in 1994. Pullman has an affinity for Spaceballs and, ultimately, for Candy, as he told The New York Times in 2017. After Pullman struggled to be funny enough for Mel Brooks (although he described Brooks as “generous”), it was Candy who stepped up and supported him:

“Later I was disappointed that I had allowed Mel’s snap to fill me with shame and frustration. In the moment, as we all reset for another take, I must have looked like I was stewing. I felt the arm of the Mog drape around my shoulders. John leaned in. ‘Pullman, how about another doughnut?’ He continued: ‘You’d better not look so red right now. And don’t go blue on me later.’ His chuckle and wink calmed me down. I did eventually manage to recalibrate. And the next day, Mel met me with a hug.”

Mel Brooks’ classic ‘Star Wars’ spoof is travelling at “Ludicrous Speed” to reach a wider audience before the saga continues.

In exciting news, Rick Moranis is also back for Spaceballs 2. Moranis stepped back from acting on screen during the mid-1990s, but continued to do voice work. As Moranis explained to USA Today in 2005:

“I pulled out of making movies in about ’96 or ’97. I’m a single parent, and I just found that it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies. So I took a little bit of a break. And the little bit of a break turned into a longer break, and then I found that I really didn’t miss it. In the last few years, I’ve been offered a number of parts in movies, and I’ve just turned them down. I don’t know whether I’ll go back to it or not.”

Daphne Zuniga will be back as Princess Vespa, but there’s no word on Prince Valium (Jim J. Bullock) or other performers from the first Spaceballs movie. Actors such as Joan Rivers, who voiced Dot Matrix, and Dom DeLuise, the man behind Pizza the Hutt, have also passed away in the years since Spaceballs was released.

‘Spaceballs 2’ Won’t Be Your Average Sequel

As early as 1987, in the original movie, the movie was called Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money, a title that came up again during the 2010s. In 2013, Rick Moranis addressed questions about why a second Spaceballs movie hadn’t happened:

“Mel wanted to do a sequel after it became a cult video hit. It wasn’t a box office hit. It was a cult video hit, and MGM wanted to do a sequel. And my idea for it was Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II. And I was unable to make a deal with Mel. I couldn’t make a deal.”

Now, with a new movie coming, Deadline reported that individuals close to Spaceballs 2 describe it as, “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” So, do with that information what you will.

It’s pretty unclear what fans can expect, but the scrolling text in the announcement for the forthcoming Spaceballs 2 gave some hints. The text listed how many sequels, prequels, spinoffs, prequels of sequels, sequels of prequels, etc., there have been in the Star Wars franchise, as well as those included in the MCU, the attempted DCU, and a host of other Sci-Fi properties.

‘Spaceballs 2’ Will Feature New Faces on Both Sides of the Camera

Since the announcement of a new Spaceballs movie makes it clear how the movie landscape has taken shape in the previous 40 years, it seems as though Mel Brooks is going to parody it in classic Brooks fashion. Additionally, Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez have written the script, all individuals with strong comedic roots. After it was announced that Gad was involved in writing Spaceballs 2 in 2024, he posted on Instagram:

“We are very excited! Early days still, but working with the legendary Mel freaking Brooks to make something worthy of this franchise and his legacy has been a dream come true. @benjisamit @cubanmissiledh @josh.greenbaum @kevinsalter1 and I worship at the alter of all things Brooks and we are doing everything in our power alongside Mel to make sure you get what you’ve waited 37 long years for. Mel Brooks Had Josh Gad Sweating Through a Frantic ‘Star Wars’ Refresher

The famed ‘Spaceballs’ director and comedian needed a bit of help understanding just where that galaxy far, far away has gone today.

Brooks is a producer, as is Josh Gad, one of the writers who will also appear in Spaceballs 2. Gad is expected to play Barf Jr., the son of the aforementioned Barf, played by John Candy. According to Deadline, Keke Palmer is attached to Spaceballs 2, although details about her character remain unclear. What is known is that her name in the movie is “Destiny.” It’s also been reported that Bill Pullman’s son, Lewis Pullman, will have a role of some kind in Spaceballs 2.

Spaceballs 2 will be released by Amazon MGM Studios. Since the original Spaceballs was not a success at the box office but rather developed a cult-like following in home media, this seems ideal for the continuation of the beloved franchise.
