Having shaved his hair for his role in The Sympathizer, Robert Downey Jr. has been edited into the role of Lex Luthor in a Superman fan video.

Robert Downey Jr. stunned his fans when he posted a video of his kids helping him to shave off all of his hair. It turned out that rather than just going for a radical change of look, the Iron Man actor’s bald look is for his role in HBO series The Sympathizer. However, one fan has decided that the actor’s shiny pate could also make him a prime candidate to take on the role of Lex Luthor in the now possible Man of Steel 2. They have even gone so far as to deepfake Downey Jr into a “First Look” trailer for the movie, which can be enjoyed below.
Of course there has been a huge jump in interest around the Superman franchise since the return of Henry Cavill in Black Adam’s post-credits scene. This has included many fans believing that Man of Steel 2 is coming in the not too distant future. While that is a long way from being the confirmed route Cavill’s hero will be taking as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU roadmap, that doesn’t stop fans having their theories.

Of course, Robert Downey Jr has just left the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the last few years, and whether he would even consider taking on a prominent role in the DCU is doubtful. However, it is clear that Downey Jr’s new hairdo has inspired some minds to start whirring, and who knows where that kind of thing will end.

Could Robert Downey Jr Return As Iron Man?
Disney, Marvel Studios
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, it seemed that Tony Stark was gone and that was that. However, then came the multiverse, where anything is possible and anyone can be found again in another universe. Does this mean that Downey Jr could make a surprise temporary return to his Iron Man role within the MCU?
It could be possible, but would likely not happen until the final movies of the Multiverse Saga, and it would not be a permanent return. Following his departure from the franchise, Downey Jr seemed to be happy to be leaving the MCU behind, saying at the time:
“I had an incredible 10-year run with Marvel which pushed me creatively. I now have tons more ambition to do things I haven’t done before. Evolving is key — the worst thing you can do is get in your own way. Just in the matter of me wanting to be a fit father, husband, and citizen, it’d be irresponsible of me to not keep my eye ahead so I can prepare my mind for what’s to come and the transition.”
Since then, Downey Jr has not had the greatest success on the big screen, having seen his Dolittle movie receive middling reviews and struggle to make a big impact on the box office. The Covid pandemic has delayed other projects, but his appearance in The Sympathizer on HBO is going to potentially be his biggest departure from the world of superheros to date. Whether that makes it more or less likely for him to want to step back into the world of comicbook movies, whether Marvel or DC, is something only time will tell.
