Ryan Murphy Reveals Perfectly Spooky Release Date for Season 3 of Netflix’s Monster

Ryan Murphy, the mastermind behind shows like American Horror Story, Glee, and Nip/Tuck, has unveiled the release date for the latest installment of his Netflix true crime series, Monster. Season 3 of the series will be based on the true story of Ed Gein, the American serial killer who inspired countless villains in the crime genre, and Murphy recently revealed that the upcoming series will land on the streamer in October. Just in time for the spooky season.

Per the report by What’s on Netflix, Murphy appeared on the podcast This is Gavin Newsom amid the celebrations of the recent Emmy nomination for his work in Season 2 of Monster, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The series is part of Murphy’s TV offer via Netflix, and so far, the first two seasons have been very well-received. Season 1 told the story of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, while Season 2 told the story of the Menendez brothers.

Ryan Murphy often partners up with the industry’s most famous faces to propel his projects to new heights, both in popularity and critical acclaim.

Murphy said this about the unexpected success of the show, with Season 1 earning star Evan Peters a Golden Globe for his performance as Dahmer: “I realized what was the thing that made Dahmer so popular: It was scary. It was your secret about the guy next door who’s doing dastardly things. Menendez, I always thought was smaller because it was a Rashomon story whodunit, like not who done it, but why they do it. I was very surprised it became such a lightning rod literally within a day.” The producer also reflected on the upcoming third season:

“If you think about Season 3, which is coming up where Charlie Hunnam plays Ed Gein, which is not for the squeamish. But really what it is about is, this was a person who was mentally ill, who was an undiagnosed person diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorder his entire life. Not until it was too late, when he was in prison, I believe in his 50s, was he diagnosed.

“So it really is sort of a story about mental health and awareness. That’s what I love about telling those sorts of stories. I’m not in it for the blood. I’m not in it for the gore. I’m in it for: What is it? Was he made or was he born that way? I think that story of Ed Gein is both. He was born that way and made that way.”

‘Monster’ Season 3 Is Not the First Time the Infamous Serial Killer’s Story Has Been Brought to the Screen

Paramount Pictures

Gein, also known as “the Butcher of Plainfield,” was an infamous serial killer who died in a mental institution in 1984 after a long battle with cancer. His crimes have inspired many films and TV shows throughout the decades. Some of the most notable works that were based on his heinous crimes include Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs. His story has been adapted into films like In the Light of the Moon and Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield. Monster is set to be the first big studio project to focus on the more grounded side of Gein’s story.
