‘Squid Game’ Creator Teases New Games, Same Old Creepy Doll in Season 2

Squid Game Season 2 is coming December 26, and per its creator’s claims, we’re in for a treat. Hwang Dong-hyuk has promised to make things more extreme in the show’s highly-expected return after a three-year hiatus, during which fans came up with all kinds of theories about what might happen in Season 2. Squid Game’s main character will return, but then so will the deadly head-turning doll that tells on you if you so much as flinch during the deadly version of the “Red Light, Green Light” game.

Hwang spoke to Digital Spy about the show’s return, and he teased some new, twisted versions of popular children’s games. He also said that Young-hee, the massive doll with motion sensors, will be back, as we saw weeks ago when the teaser trailer for Season 2 was released. Per Hwang:

“I hope that you understand that I can’t give you too much detail, because I don’t want to spoil anything for you in terms of the games. What I can say is that Young-hee is going to be back with her deadly game, again.

And then there’s going to be these new games that you haven’t seen before, the games that I’ve actually played growing up, and what I can guarantee, however, is that compared to Season 1, both visually and storyline-wise, the games you’re going to be seeing this time around are going to be even more intriguing.”

The games in Squid Game’s Season 1 are all deadly, but they are not equally difficult. Some prove to be quite easy.

In the show, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) has a problem with gambling, and he’s broke. He’s part of a group of 456 people who get invited to compete in a sick game. Once inside a mysterious facility, they’re summoned to play deadly versions of children’s games. Only the losers don’t just leave the game – they do so in a body bag. Seong tries his best to find out who’s behind the sick game, and manages to learn that someone very creative is in control of everything.

Hwang also spoke of Seong’s return to Season 2 after he was the last man standing, and seemingly swore revenge against those who subjected him to the emotional torture. This is what the writer/director said about the character’s storyline in Season 2:

“The main axis of the storyline is going to be the clash between Gi-hun with these motives [to stop the games] and In-ho (Lee Byung-hun), who wants to stop Gi-hun from stopping the game.

So I think focusing on that main storyline is going to help you get a great viewing experience”

The Risk of ‘Squid Game’s Release Schedule

There’s no topping what was accomplished in 2021, when the first season of Squid Game quickly became Netflix’s most-watched series – a title it still holds against juggernauts like Bridgerton and Stranger Things. Naturally, Hwang has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to both repeat the first season’s success and make a worthy sequel that satisfies hungry fans. Yes, there was the reality show, but it wasn’t enough.

The showrunner also addressed the fact that, after Season 2, Season 3 will take some time to arrive. He seems confident that fans will be patient, but he also told Digital Spy that some will most likely be angry at him for how Season 2 ends. We’re sure there will be a cliffhanger, but in the world of Squid Game, that’s a recipe for a panic attack.

In Squid Game, a mysterious invitation to join a competition is sent to people at risk who are in dire need of money. Four hundred fifty-six participants from all walks of life are locked into a secret location where they play games to win 45.6 billion won. Games are selected from traditional Korean children’s games, such as Red Light and Green Light, but the consequence of losing is death. To survive, competitors must choose their alliances carefully – but the further they go in the competition, the more likely betrayal will rear its ugly head.
