We now know when we’re expecting to see the last of The Last of Us, as HBO has confirmed when the hit video game adaptation will come to an end. HBO’s series first debuted in 2023 and was a major critical and pop culture hit. Adapted from the video game franchise by Craig Mazin and NaughtyDog games studio, The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic future where a fungal virus has turned over 95% of the world’s population into deadly zombies. Season 2 of The Last of Us is set to premiere this April, although an exact release date has not yet been confirmed. And, according to HBO, it will take us to the halfway point in the network’s adaptation of the franchise.
During an interview with Deadline, Francesca Orsi, an executive vice-president at HBO, teased The Last of Us’ endgame. “We don’t have a complete or final plan,” she said, confirming that nothing has been set in stone yet. “But, I think it’s looking like four seasons.” Season 1 adapted the entirety of the first video game. Season 2 was first reported to be adapting the first half of The Last of Us Part II, with the second half being wrapped up in Season 3. However, it appears that HBO is looking to take its time with the adaptation. Orsi continued:
“I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done.”
Her statement goes hand-in-hand with what the show’s co-creators, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, told Deadline last year. The pair revealed that upcoming seasons will expand upon the video games, just like Season 1 did with the phenomenal Bill and Frank episode. “We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” Craig Mazin said. “And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”
What to Expect From ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2
The Last of Us Season 2 will introduce various new intriguing and dangerous characters. The big draw for the new season is Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), who was the main antagonist in The Last of Us Part II. Also, joining Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie) for Season 2 is Catherine O’Hara, Isabela Merced, and Jeffrey Wright. Season 2 will pick up after a big time jump from the ending of Season 1, which saw Joel and Ellie settle down with Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) after the massacre at the Fireflies base.

HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 just revealed it is diverging from the video game in a pretty big way.
During the conversation, Francesca Orsi teased what fans can expect from The Last of Us’ second season. As well as Abbie, Joel and Ellie will have to contend with several other groups of established survivors. “There’s certain elements in terms of the various factions that are competing for survival that reveal themselves as a really intriguing survivalist group,” she said. “And, I think they just have a quality to them that feels distinct in how they present it.”
