The Nun 2 Post-Credits Scene Affects The Conjuring 4, According to Director

Director Michael Chaves has recently shared an update on The Conjuring: The Last Rites, the ninth installment in the successful franchise, following the release of The Nun II. Chaves, who took over directorial duties from Corin Hardy for the follow-up, is no stranger to the genre, having previously helmed The Curse of La Llorona in 2019 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in 2021. The Conjuring: The Last Rites remains a work in progress, with the writing process ongoing, leaving room for different creative directions.

During an interview with SlashFilm, Chaves delved into the post-credits scene of The Nun II and its connection to the upcoming film. He expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating that it could take various narrative paths. While he refrained from revealing specific plot details, Chaves teased a “great finale” being planned for The Conjuring: Last Rites, suggesting that fans can expect an exciting conclusion to the next chapter in the saga, even hinting at the potential for a crossover of all Conjuring demons.

“I think that they’re still writing it. They’re still working on it. There’s definitely Conjuring: Last Rites coming. And in terms of the exorcism of Maurice, that’s always been a center, a cornerstone marker in the timeline, and I think it’s up to interpretation,” explained Chaves. “I think there’s a lot of things that need to align, so it could go a couple different ways.” He continued:

As an audience member, I would 100% see [a crossover of all Conjuring demons]. I couldn’t give away what I know about what’s being developed, but I know that they’re going to end with a bang. I know that there is a great finale being planned for Last Rites and as to what or who’s in it … I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

James Wan’s Vision for The Conjuring Universe

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Conjuring franchise, which kicked off in 2013 under the direction of James Wan, has become a massive success. The first installment introduced us to Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who are paranormal investigators renowned for their involvement in haunting cases. Drawing inspiration from real-life events, particularly the Amityville Horror story, it centers on the Warrens coming to the aid of the Perron family, who encountered increasingly unsettling occurrences in their newly acquired Rhode Island farmhouse.

Over the years, the franchise has expanded with numerous sequels and spinoffs. As it celebrated its 10-year anniversary, James Wan shared his aspirations for its future in an online featurette. He expressed the desire to bring the narrative “full circle” by reconnecting the story of the demon nun to The Conjuring. Wan noted the immense popularity of this cinematic universe, underscoring the cultural impact of the demon nun character, which has resonated deeply with fans.

“It would be great to eventually bring it back full circle — bring the Nun’s story and tie it back into The Conjuring. We’ve created this universe that has such a huge fan base. The demon nun really captured the zeitgeist.”

The Nun II is currently playing in theaters.
