Timothee Chalamet says he’s still preparing for James Mangold’s planned Bob Dylan biopic Going Electric.
The long-gestating Bob Dylan biopic Going Electric is still happening according to its lead star. Back in early 2020, it was reported that Timothée Chalamet had been cast to play a young Bob Dylan in a biopic directed by Logan and Indiana Jones 5 helmer James Mangold. The project was set up at Fox Searchlight, though it wasn’t stated when filming might begin or when the movie would be released. Little was revealed about the film itself, though it’s expected to follow Dylan’s rise to fame with the title referring to when the legendary musician switched from folk music to rock.
Nearly three full years later, there haven’t been any fruitful updates on Going Electric with both Chalamet and Mangold keeping busy with other high-profile projects. But that doesn’t mean that the film has died in development hell. In a new chat with Variety, Chalamet provided a positive update on the biopic. The actor admits that the project could still fall through, though he’s stayed prepared for it anyway, suggesting that things are now looking very good for Going Electric moving forward. From the interview:

“I haven’t stopped preparing, which has been one of the greatest gifts for me. It’s been a wonderful experience getting to dive into that world, whether we get to make it or not. But without giving anything away — because I don’t want to beat anyone to the punch, and obviously things have to come together officially — the winds that are blowing are blowing in a very positive direction.”

Fans Will First Hear Timothée Chalamet Sing in Wonka
Warner Bros. Pictures
Playing a popular, iconic singer like Dylan will be something new for Chalamet, but it won’t be his first experience with music. Prior to his rise to fame, Chalamet used to rap in high school using the alias Lil Timmy Tim. A video of him rapping has since been released to YouTube where it’s gone viral, amassing 10 million views in four years. If you’re inclined, you can watch the video below.
Chalamet has also been working on Wonka, a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel with the actor playing a young Willy Wonka. The film features several musical numbers which include Chalamet singing and dancing. Of course, Willy Wonka’s music will likely be quite a bit different from Bob Dylan’s classic hits, but the film will provide a peek at Chalamet performing music in a feature film before Going Electric.
For now, Chalamet fans can catch him in the new film Bones and All, which hits theaters on Nov. 18, 2022. He’ll also be returning for the upcoming sequel Dune: Part Two, releasing on Nov. 3, 2023.
