Joel Kinnaman took on the role of RoboCop in a 2014 reboot of the classic sci-fi movie of the ’80s, but it didn’t quite manage to gain the same kind of acclaim. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, the Silent Night star addressed why he believes the film failed.
“It was a cool experience. I think if I would have done it now, I think I would have inserted myself more into it. I love [director] José’s [Padilha] concept into it. The one thing, I think, was lacking in that film, I like to be self-critical, I think that it was one of those films where I think, we who made it didn’t fully take into account what RoboCop was for the fans. Tonally, that sort of [Paul] Verhoeven satire, because it’s so ingrained in the RoboCop franchise and its being. It’s different when a new filmmaker comes in and puts his voice on it, and José had a very clear image of what he wanted to do, it was an anti-Empirialistic take, and I think that movie would have done better if we had listened more to the fans beforehand. But I think it stands alone … I almost think the RoboCop film we did would have been a better movie if it wouldn’t have been named ‘RoboCop.'”

While his RoboCop movie was not his greatest hit, Kinnaman’s appearance as Rick Flag in both David Ayer’s and James Gunn’s Suicide Squad movies proved a much more successful affair. However, with his character being killed off by John Cena’s Peacemaker in the latter of the two movies, it looks like his DCU run could be at an end. Or maybe not.
Kinnaman recently revealed that he’d love to return to the DC Universe as an entirely different character. In a recent interview with the Post-Credit Podcast, the actor said:
“Yeah, you know, but I love that scene though… It was such a good way to go. But, yeah, for sure. Maybe I’ll come back and play some nasty villain in a couple of years.”
]According to Gunn, the new DCU canon officially starts in 2024. Earlier this year, Gunn stated on Threads (via ComicBook.com):
“Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year – a sort of aperitif to the DCU – & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think its okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.”
The adult-animated series Creature Commandos (which currently does not have a release date) will officially start the DCU and mark the DCU’s first television show. In addition to Creature Commandos, the Gunn-directed Superman: Legacy is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
