Lil Nas X says he’s dropping “the best song of all time” this week

Lil Nas X has teased his next single ‘Here We Go!’ on social media, telling fans he hopes they’re as “proud” of it as he is.

Earlier this week, the 25-year-old shared the cover art for the single, which features a detective badge from the Detroit Police Department with the singer’s headshot attached. Nas X – real name Montero Hill – also shared in the caption that he is feeling more confident about his new musical approach.

“So excited to release the best song of all time this Friday!” Hill wrote. “Also, sorry I’ve been so scared with my art lately. I’m coming around to myself again. I will make you guys very proud.”

Camila Cabello – who recently collaborated with Lil Nas X on the Kylie Minogue-sampling ‘He Knows’ – commented beneath the post to show her support, writing, “Nature has seasons and so do we. There is no spring without winter. It’s your time to bloom baby!”

According to Billboard, ‘Here We Go!’ samples Crazy Frog’s 2005 hit ‘Axel F’. The song will also feature on the soundtrack for the latest instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop film franchise, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which will arrive on Netflix on July 3. Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as Axel Foley in the upcoming movie.

‘Here We Go!’ will be Hill’s third solo release of the year. Back in January, he dropped his first gospel song, ‘J Christ’, which received backlash from the Christian community. The cover art for ‘J Christ’ saw Nas X being hoisted up on a cross, similar to the narrative of Jesus’ crucifixion, and many said it was a “mockery of Christ”. It also got the stamp of approval from the Church of Satan.

In response, the ‘Rodeo’ star said it was “depressing” to see the negativity surrounding the song.

“I’ve never been here, mentally and even physically, where… you push your art into the world, and it’s received negatively by the majority,” he told Jay Shetty in a recent appearance on his On Purpose podcast. “But then, like, also understanding why, and having to see it through.” He added, “You can become super angry with yourself.”

He then released ‘Where Do We Go Now?’, which he wrote in collaboration with Omer Fedi and Blake Slatkin. The introspective song came out ahead of his HBO Max documentary, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero.

Last May, Hill reflected on Beyoncé’s recent success in country music after releasing her eighth studio album, ‘Cowboy Carter’. He said he “wasn’t even able to experience” the same success with his record-breaking Number One single ‘Old Town Road’ – which turned five this year.
