Listen to Bdrmm’s “aggressive” new single ‘Lake Disappointment’

Bdrmm have shared a new single called ‘Lake Disappointment’ – you can listen to it below.

The song serves as the final preview of the Hull band’s third studio album ‘Microtonic’, which is due for release on February 28 via Mogwai’s label Rock Action (pre-order/pre-save here).

Following on from their 2024 track ‘John On The Ceiling’ and last month’s ‘Infinity Peaking’, Bdrmm’s latest offering sees the four-piece once again showcase the more electronic side to their sound – this time with a grittier edge.

‘Lake Disappointment’ comes after the group decided to delve further into the dance music world with their recent releases. This move was inspired by supporting Daniel Avery and participating in a group rave at London’s Field Day.

Singer and guitarist Ryan Smith described the new single as “probably the most aggressive and exciting song we’ve conjured up”, adding: “I remember sending it to Alex (our producer) and I’ve never seen him so excited about a track.

“It was such a dream to work on. I feel like within all the melancholy of the record there is a lot of anger too. This is us getting that out, and saying ‘fuck you’ to the wrongdoers.”

The song is accompanied by a creepy and bizarre official music video, directed by Joe and Scott Gist. Speaking about the visuals, Smith explained: “I will always hold such a great memory of shooting the video.

“We ventured to an abandoned warehouse in Sheffield and recruited an amazing production team and created our own dystopian TV shopping channel (under strong orders [from] our bosses at MicroTech).”

He continued: “We must have been sick for a week after, from being stood around in the cold for 12 hours in hospital gowns, but it was worth it. No pain, no gain (we’re still waiting for the gain).” You can watch it above.

Bdrmm will showcase the forthcoming ‘Microtonic’ on a UK and European headline tour next month. The trek will include a performance at the Electric Ballroom in Camden Town, London on March 19. Find any remaining tickets here (UK).

‘Microtonic’ was recently listed among NME‘s most anticipated album releases of 2025

During an interview with NME in 2023, Bdrmm spoke about entering into a more electronic world on their second studio record, ‘I Don’t Know’. “We’ve got the confidence to try new things out now,” said bassist Jordan Smith at the time.

“On this second album, the best part about it was having the first under our belt with a certain sound, it was a launch pad for thinking about where we wanted to go next and what ideas we wanted to get across. I think also partly the fact we’re able to afford more instruments now.”

Guitarist Joe Vickers added: “This record is us having the confidence to delve deeper into the music that we love. It is a cliché that we’ve put the guitars down, but I struggle playing the same things over and over again, like krautrock riffs, it bores me and if I am then everyone else is.”

In a four-star review of ‘I Don’t Know’, NME wrote: “This is a special record by a band who are not-so-quietly raising the bar for the whole British scene.”
