Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a settlement in their divorce proceedings, eight years after the actress filed to end their marriage.
The Maleficent star sought to bring an end to her two-year marriage to Pitt in September 2016, citing irreconcilable differences, and on Monday (December 30), Jolie’s lawyers announced that the two had signed off on their divorce.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” her lawyer James Simon told People. “She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
People also cite a source close to Jolie, who said: “She doesn’t speak ill of [Pitt] publicly or privately. She’s been trying hard to be light after a dark time.”

The original divorce filing followed an alleged physical altercation on a private plane, with one of their children, Maddix, allegedly involved in the incident. Pitt was subject to a “child abuse investigation” in relation to the alleged incident, with the Los Angeles Department of Child and Family Services later clearing the actor of wrongdoing.
Details of the alleged altercation came to light further in 2022 after Jolie was revealed to be the plaintiff in an anonymous complaint against the FBI, which had closed an investigation into Pitt’s alleged domestic assault. Pitt has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
In April, Jolie’s lawyers claimed that Pitt was physically abusive prior to the plane incident, with a representative for Pitt declining to comment on the new abuse allegations.
There is also an ongoing legal dispute between the two actors relating to their shared wine business Château Miraval. It stems back to 2022, when Pitt sued Jolie for allegedly attempting to sell her share of the business without his prior consent.
Jolie claims that Pitt blocked her sale of the property and would only agree if he agreed to a “more onerous” and “expansive” non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Jolie has previously suggested that Pitt wanted her to sign an NDA to stop her speaking out about his alleged abusive behaviour towards her and her children.
In July, Jolie urged Pitt to drop the case so that her family can start to “heal”.
Jolie’s current film is Maria, a biopic of the opera singer Maria Callas that documents her final days in ‘70s Paris. In a three-star review, NME wrote: “Maria is a showcase for Jolie, who’s magnetic as the flamboyantly attired star. Callas is meant to be past her prime but Jolie’s singing is nothing short of extraordinary and she certainly captures her subject’s mixture of fragility, self-mythology and stoicism.”
“Still, the third film in Larraín’s ‘Great Women’ trilogy, following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021), can’t quite summon Callas’ own playfulness, which comes to life in archival footage when the credits roll.”
Maria is out in UK cinemas on January 10.
