‘The Inbetweeners’ stars to play Oasis’ Liam and Noel Gallagher in Comic Relief “reunion” sketch

The Inbetweeners stars James Buckley and Joe Thomas are set to play OasisLiam and Noel Gallagher in a mock reunion for Comic Relief.

As fans on social media predicted after heavy hints pointed to Comic Relief planning something Oasis-related, it’s been revealed that Buckley and Thomas will reunite on-screen for an Oasis parody.

Best known for their roles as Jay and Simon in The Inbetweeners, they kept fans guessing before the news was announced, having shared a picture of themselves together – presumably on set – which Buckley captioned: “Don’t call it a comeback.”

In a statement (via Radio Times), Buckley said he was “honoured to be asked” to be a part of the sketch, adding: “Of course, being a huge Oasis fan, getting to be Liam for the day was a dream come true.”

Thomas added that he grew up watching Comic Relief, with the “big sketch” always being a highlight of the night,” so it’s both thrilling and nerve-wracking to be a part of it”.

The sketch will air as part of the Red Nose Day broadcast on Friday (March 21), starting at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Comic Relief has also revealed it will be giving away two VIP tickets in the Royal Box at Wembley Stadium for the reunion tour on Saturday August 2, with winners also taking home a guitar signed by both Liam and Noel as well as official tour merchandise. You can find more information and how to enter here.

Back in 2021, Buckley did NME’s Soundtrack of My Life interview, and revealed the first gig he ever went to was was Oasis at Finsbury Park in 2002. “The first gig, and also the best gig I’ve ever been to,” he said at the time.

“The support was incredible: The CharlatansBlack Rebel Motorcycle ClubCornershopThe Coral… it felt like there were 30 bands playing that day. Doors were at midday, and I was like: ‘I gotta be there then, I don’t want to miss Oasis!’

“I thought that’s just what gigs were like, all the time. That night Oasis were the greatest band in the world. Watching them play live, it just completely made sense. A reunion sometime? I think if The Stone Roses reunited for a few gigs, then any band could.”

Now the reunion is a reality, NME has spoken to sources close to the upcoming tour, and  revealed details of who’ll be playing in the band line-up. They said Andy Bell will be on bass, Gem Archer and Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs on guitar, and Joey Waronker is set to be on drums.
