Baker Grace is an intense, meaningful and talented songwriter. Her latest release “American Dream Girl” comes at a time when the satirical billion-dollar grossing movie, Barbie crushes the theaters with its own messages. Barbie is a plastic paradox. She has a narrow vision of womanhood well at the same time being Everywoman. Although over 60 years old, she’s eternally 20 and sexy but sexless.
Margot Robbie portrays the stereotypical Barbie, who ventures into the real world, and along the way, learns who made her. She learns about death and decision-making, as well as feminism, and the trap of attempted perfection. “American Dream Girl” seems to have a similar message but without the doll.
Baker Grace sings like an Angel and appears as one as well in the video both with makeup and without. Today in a world we tend to overproduce people and rely on their beauty for them to get by. Especially in the world of entertainment, a good example Billie Eilish, people are always trying to remake you into something that you didn’t start out to be.
The video is powerfully dark but in the words of Leonard Cohen “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in..” This song could easily become an anthem for all the Barbie dolls around the world…..
