The Los Angeles Angels hired former big-league catcher Kurt Suzuki as their next manager, the team announced Tuesday.
Suzuki has received a one-year contract.
Suzuki’s deal has multiple options, the team said, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com.
“I make a joke of it, but I feel like I’ve been playing on one-year deals my whole career,” Suzuki said, according to Greg Beacham of the Associated Press. “I feel like I had to prove myself every single year I played this game. … I’m here because I want to lead this team. I’m here because I want to help these players. I want to do good for this city and this organization.”
The 42-year-old spent the last three seasons as a special assistant to Angels general manager Perry Minasian after retiring as a player following the 2022 campaign.
Suzuki will be the fifth Angels manager since Mike Scioscia’s final season as skipper in 2018. Suzuki has no previous experience as a manager.
Ron Washington managed the Angels for parts of the last two seasons but stepped aside during the 2025 campaign to undergo medical treatment for a heart condition. He was replaced on an interim basis by Ray Montgomery.
The Angels were reportedly connected to former players Albert Pujols and Torii Hunter before they were each ruled out as managerial candidates Monday.
The Angels finished the 2025 season with a 72-90 record. They have not made the postseason since 2014 despite employing superstars like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani in the past decade.
