The New York Giants are expected to start Jameis Winston at quarterback on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jordan Raanan.
Winston gets the nod after surpassing Russell Wilson on the depth chart as the No. 2 quarterback, and with starter Jaxson Dart unlikely to make it out of the concussion protocol in time for Sunday, Schefter and Raanan add.
New York’s decision marks a shift in direction under interim coach Mike Kafka, following the club’s firing of head coach Brian Daboll earlier this week.
The switch is also another demotion for Wilson, who started the season as the Giants’ opening-day starter before being benched for the rookie Dart.
Winston’s known for his ability to jumpstart an offense, though he carries a reputation for being prone to turnovers. The 31-year-old has thrown for 154 touchdowns to 111 interceptions across 105 career games, including 87 starts. Winston started seven contests for the Cleveland Browns last year, recording 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The Giants also reportedly want Winston to be the backup behind Dart next season.
New York is off to its third straight 2-8 start.
