New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton showed excitement about the team’s search for a new quarterback, saying it’d be extra special for him to potentially play with Aaron Rodgers.
“I think Aaron Rodgers is probably the greatest quarterback ever, just (as a) pure thrower of ball. I have a ton of respect for him,” Slayton said Thursday, according to SNY.
He added: “I think Aaron Rodgers has shown that he can still spin it. Like I said, I think we have all the tools to make a quarterback like him, or any veteran or rookie, successful. If we get him, I would love to play with him. It’s not very often in this league you get a chance to play with a Hall of Fame quarterback.”
Slayton is returning for a seventh season with the Giants after re-signing on a three-year, $36-million contract.
The Giants have reportedly shown interest in Rodgers and Russell Wilson to be their new starting QB. The Pittsburgh Steelers are apparently also interested in Rodgers, while the Minnesota Vikings are considering making a push for the four-time NFL MVP as well. New York and Pittsburgh are waiting for the 41-year-old to make a decision before exploring other options.
Slayton also praised Wilson on Thursday. The Giants are expected to host Wilson for a free-agent visit Friday.
“Selfishly, he’s been known to have a great deep ball, so I love that, of course,” said Slayton, who’s averaged 15 yards per reception since entering the NFL.
He added: “He’s played well in this league for a long time, played well last year for the Steelers. Clearly, he’s still got gas in the tank.”
The Giants started three different quarterbacks in 2024: Daniel Jones (10 starts), Drew Lock (five), and Tommy DeVito (two). They combined for just 15 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions. DeVito is currently the only signal-caller under contract for New York.
Rodgers passed for 28 TDs to 11 INTs in 2024 with a 63% completion rate. The New York Jets – who went 5-12 last year – released the four-time MVP on Wednesday after two seasons.
Wilson helped the Steelers reach the playoffs this past season by throwing for 16 touchdowns against five picks in 11 starts. It was his first season in Pittsburgh following a disappointing two-year stint with the Denver Broncos.
