Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton)
Bad Santa (2003)
Bad Santa sees miserable conman and curmudgeon Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton) and his partner Marcus (Tony Cox) playing the roles of Santa and his elf every year, all so they can rob department stores during the Christmas holidays. However, their plans unravel when Willie meets down-on-his-luck kid Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly), which causes him to surprisingly embrace the Christmas spirit. Lauren Graham, Lauren Tom, John Ritter, and Bernie Mac are also attached to the main cast.
Why the Raunchy Willie Is Relatable
First off, Bad Santa is definitely for adults in the family — it has crass humor unsuitable for a young audience. It’s perfect for when the kids go to bed. That said, Billy Bob Thorton is oddly charming, falling into that lovable loser category as a man down on his luck, embittered and jaded, yet determined to get what he wants. Seeing his transformation from a jerk to a kind friend to an unfortunate boy is always a cheerful Christmas message. At the same time, for those who have had their fair share of the holidays, one can certainly relate to a bit of holiday drunkenness and misbehaving, making Willie an odd but perfectly iconic character for the Scrooge in us all. Edward (Johnny Depp)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Edward Scissorhands features an artificial humanoid named Edward (Johnny Depp), who is rendered incomplete after his inventor passes before giving him hands, leaving him with sharp scissors and blades instead. After a suburban family takes him in, he falls in love with their daughter Kim (Winona Ryder). But his inexperience with normal life, and his gentle nature contrasted with his dangerous hands, makes forming a relationship difficult.
Edward Is an Iconic Gothic Christmas Character
Tim Burton certainly knows how to make movies that compliment the holidays and also have a touch of his unique gothic charm. In fact, Edward Scissorhands is one of the movies that cemented Johnny Depp as a dark icon in the cinematic world, with his gentle but troubled persona that resonates with the kind of tragic romanticism of a song by The Cure. Depp’s performance is unforgettable, and Edward’s character is all the more iconic because of it. Edward Scissorhands is too often overlooked as a Christmas film, but there’s no denying that it is one. Stream Edward Scissorhands on Disney+, Hulu, and Peacock.

Emmet Otter (Jerry Nelson)
Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas (1977)
CBC
Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas is about Emmet Otter (Jerry Nelson) and his mom, who are having a difficult Christmas. Both are low on money and unable to get the other a Christmas gift. However, when a local talent contest with a cash prize is launched, Emmet puts a hole in his mother’s cherished wash basin in the hope of winning the money to get her a new one and a proper Christmas gift.
Emmet Otter Is a Charming Musician
The Muppets thrive during the Christmas season, with both A Muppet Family Christmas and The Muppet Christmas Carol being beloved classics. Yet there are no lead Muppets in those films specific to the holiday — and that is where the lovely, quaint, and underrated Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas comes in, embodying the best of Muppet movies and standing alone from the others (other than Kermit narrating the intro).
With new radio technology that would come into use later in Star Wars, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth, the Jim Henson company created fantastic puppet characters that feel warm and real. Emmet is adorable, and his desire to make his mom proud is endearing and sweet. In addition to this, he deals with adversity with a smile and leaves audiences with the common realization that the best Christmas gift is time spent with family and friends. Gin, Hana, and Miyuki
Tokyo Godfathers (2003)
Tokyo Godfathers follows three unhoused people in Tokyo: Gin, Hana, and Miyuki, who find an abandoned baby in the garbage on Christmas Eve. The three then decide to find the baby’s parents, putting them on a remarkable and heartwarming holiday journey. Unlike director Satoshi Kon’s other films, Tokyo Godfathers eschews supernatural storytelling for a story that’s refreshingly down-to-earth, while also marking Kon’s first-ever digitally-produced production.
Gin, Hana, and Miyuki Are Perfect Together
The late, great Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika) left behind a legacy of emotionally touching stories, and his take on Christmas is an underrated classic. This story largely leans on the charismatic trio who find the child, who are essentially inseparable in the movie. Bound by their struggles, Gin, Hana, and Miyuki come together to accomplish something great, melting away any ice around the heart that winter may have built up. They are wonderfully expressive and entertaining, and embody a strong sense of morals, making them an admirable trio. It’s not the most conventional Christmas film, but it’s one that’s sure to stick with you. Stream Tokyo Godfathers on Prime Video and Tubi.

The Sticky Bandits
Home Alone (1990)
It doesn’t get much more iconic than Home Alone, and this won’t be the last time it appears on this list. In this well-known story, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister is mistakenly left behind when his family travels to Paris for vacation. He starts to celebrate his freedom, but is soon interrupted by two thieves looking to rob the house, just as his parents realize their shocking mistake.
If Your Door Is Open, the Sticky Bandits Are Coming Inside
The comedic buffoons that make up the Sticky Bandits, Harry and Marv (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), are as essential to the success of Home Alone as Kevin McCallister. Adding a slapstick comedic edge, the way the two play off each other as personalities and set each other up for the many traps left for them makes for the best comedy you will find during the holiday season. The two would go on to reappear in the film’s direct sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, doubling down on their comedic antics once more. Stream Home Alone on Disney+.

Santa Claus (Kurt Russell)
The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
The Christmas Chronicles is easily up there as one of Netflix’s best Christmas movies. Hoping to get the jump on Santa (Kurt Russell), Kate and Teddy Pierce hatch a plan to capture the jolly man on camera on Christmas Eve. However, their scheme becomes disastrous, causing him to crash his sleigh and lose his festive cargo. The two join Santa to save the holiday and deal with the rest of the town’s disbelief at having the real Santa in their presence.
Kurt Russell Was Born to be Santa
Kurt Russell seems like he was born for the role of Santa Claus in The Christmas Chronicles. Giving the classic character a slightly rough edge, Russell’s Santa is one of the coolest committed to the screen, becoming an instant classic, and his interactions with the kids and townsfolk make him the larger-than-life character he was always meant to be. The movie was a success for Netflix, resulting in a sequel, The Christmas Chronicles 2, in 2020. Stream The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix.

Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon)
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
In The Nightmare Before Christmas, the Pumpkin King of “Halloween Town”, Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), discovers a door that leads him to “Christmas Town.” Having grown bored with the endless freaks and frights of Halloween Town, he decides to embrace the yuletide holiday as a refreshing shake-up. However, his ghoulish gifts are not as appreciated as he thought they would be, and he realizes he has to save Santa from the residents of Halloween Town and get him back on the sleigh so that he can save Christmas.
The Pumpkin King Steals Christmas
The Nightmare Before Christmas has always straddled the two holidays of Halloween and Christmas, allowing those who love things more spooky to get a movie that works from October to December. Jack Skellington also perfectly embodies both of these celebrations, with a wonderfully gothic view of how the world should work, but having a gentle heart on the inside. As a bonus, Jack is also a great singer (via the talents of Danny Elfman), making him an ideal character for those who love musicals. Stream The Nightmare Before Christmas on Disney+.

Frosty (Jackie Vernon)
Frosty the Snowman (1969)
Let me tell ya — there must have been some magic in that old silk hat those kids found, because when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around! The 1969 classic Frosty the Snowman is an extension of that classic Christmas carol, which was originally written in 1950 by Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys. In this version of the story, Frosty (Jackie Vernon) heads to the North Pole with the kids that brought him to life to seek colder climates, while being chased by a wizard who wants his hat back.
A Heartwarming Man of Snow
Despite the original 1969 version of Frosty the Snowman being a brief TV special at only 22 minutes long, it has become a beloved annual tradition for many people thanks to its bright and joyful animation and expressive characters. Frosty also found an ideal voice actor in Jackie Vernin, injecting the snowman with a jovial tone, warmth and good spirit that made him utterly endearing. Buy Frosty the Snowman on Fandango At Home.

Scott Calvin (Tim Allen)
The Santa Clause (1994)
The Santa Clause is yet another classic Disney Christmas movie, which originally debuted in 1994. After accidentally knocking Santa Claus off his roof and presumably putting him out of commission, grizzled business person Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) enters into a contract to replace the previous jolly man. At first fighting it, his body begins to transform, and Scott finds himself getting into the Christmas spirit while reconnecting with his kids in his new role. Eric Lloyd co-starred alongside Allen as Scott’s son, Charlie.
A Distant Father to the Father of Christmas
Tim Allen’s transformation into Santa Claus relied on the actors’ comedic chops to make believable his personality change from a distant and shallow father to the father of Christmas throughout The Santa Clause. He certainly made it work, offering a wonderful switch into the Christmas spirit throughout the movie. The character has been further developed in follow-up movies, creating its own kind of cinematic universe all based around Allen’s portrayal of the beloved festive figure. Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim)
A Christmas Carol (1951)
A Christmas Carol, originally written by Charles Dickens, follows the bitter and miserable moneylender in 1860s London, Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim), who is reviled throughout his neighborhood and abusive to his employees. Hating any merriment, he has a particular distaste for Christmas. But when Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of past, present, and future, they show him that his path will only lead him to loneliness and the suffering of others. He comes to learn the errors of his ways, and comes back in touch with the spirit of the season.
We All Know a Scrooge
Besides having the best Christmas catchphrase, Ebenezer Scrooge is arguably the most revisited Christmas character in all cinema, with multiple adaptations spanning decades. The character is so iconic that being labeled as “a Scrooge” is common for anyone who’s not a fan of the festive holiday. Though many of the adaptations are noteworthy, like the classic Muppets version, the 1951 film starring Alastair Sim is considered the quintessential performance that defined the character. Notably, the turnaround from an angry cheapskate to a man embracing the Christmas spirit — through the work of spirits — is done with such skill that it draws viewers in more than any other adaptation. Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase)
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
Embracing the inevitable Christmas mishaps, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation follows Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase) who tries his best to give his family the greatest Christmas. This includes decorating the house with over 20,000 lights, inspiring the electrifying original poster, and finding the perfect tree — which turned out to be too big. Of course, these are only the start of his holiday troubles in this classic Christmas comedy.
Clark Griswold is Like Every Parent on Christmas
While leaning into the hopeless father trope, Griswold’s love of his family and drive to give them the best Christmas he can is admirable. At the film’s release, Chevy Chase was already a comedy veteran. Yet he shows reserve at times too, giving one of his most memorable performances by evoking an everyman persona that makes the movie relatable to anyone who has gone through Christmas stress with family. Just like other Christmas films on this list, it’s become required viewing for the annual holiday. Stream National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on Hulu and Max.

Gizmo (Howie Mandell)
Gremlins (1984)
Gremlins tells the story of Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan), the son of a struggling inventor living in Kingston Falls. After receiving a strange creature called a “mogwai” from his father as a Christmas gift, Billy finds himself taking care of the adorable Gizmo (Howie Mandell) and abiding by the three rules: do not let it get wet; do not expose it to direct sunlight; and do not feed it after midnight. However, after a series of mix-ups, Billy accidentally spawns more mogwai, which eventually turn into chaotic gremlins.
An Adorable Mogwai for Christmas
Who did not want a mogwai when they were young? Gizmo is an adorable, cute, expressive little creature you want to pet and hug. In addition, Gizmo is a loyal friend, willing to step up to the plate when those he loves are in danger. Chris Walas, who designed the mogwai, managed to add an adorable angle to Joe Dante’s Gremlins, a film more closely associated with wanton destruction and cartoony violence. For many people, this film is a Christmas staple, and Gizmo is an iconic Christmas character because of it. Stream Gremlins on Max.

Rudolph (Billie Mae Richards)
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, a staple of the holiday season, originally hit the small screen in 1964. Following the origin of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, from being an outcast to one of Santa’s most beloved reindeer, the 1964 claymation TV movie cemented itself as one of the most recognizable Christmas specials ever made. It’s certainly one of the most iconic Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, at least. The movie would also lead to follow-ups Rudolph’s Shiny New Year and Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys.
A Reindeer With an Underdog Story
Besides being named after one of the most recognizable Christmas songs of all time, 1964’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer captures the joy of the season unlike any other movie of the ’60s. The claymation style gives Rudolph an instantly recognizable image, but the characters’ embrace of being different draws you into the story. It is a classic underdog story, and Rudolph’s playful and loving nature ensures audiences cheer for him throughout his journey to be on Santa’s reindeer team. Klaus feels like one of those movies that will become a revered classic in years to come, and already has a solid fanbase touting the movie’s heartfelt take on the origin of Santa Claus. Jesper echoes the story of many other Christmas families, someone starting off despising the social merriment around the holiday but slowly learning to embrace it by making an emotional connection with someone else. George Bailey (James Stewart)
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
George Bailey (James Stewart), a dedicated family man who has hit rock bottom and financial ruin, decides that maybe those in his life would be better off if he ended it all in It’s a Wonderful Life. Deciding to jump off a bridge on Christmas Eve, he is interrupted by his guardian angel, Clarence, who shows him what the life of those around him would be like if he was never born. It’s a tale you’ve likely seen referenced or parodied in the decades since this film’s original release, as it had a tremendous impact on critics back in 1946. That said, it wasn’t too popular with general audiences.
George Bailey Is a Man on the Edge, Who Finds Joy Again
George Bailey is one of the more complex Christmas characters, a man on the extreme edge who is given a second chance to see what life would be without him. While this echoes a similar sentiment to A Christmas Carol, there is an undeniable charm in James Stewarts’ portrayal of Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life. Ending with overflowing joy, the character leaves a strong impact as he is reunited with his family and sees the value of hope. And don’t forget: “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.” Stream It’s a Wonderful Life on Prime Video and Hoopla.

Ralphie (Peter Billingsley)
A Christmas Story (1983)
Young Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) is determined to convince his parents, teacher, and Santa Claus that a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun is the perfect Christmas gift for him. With this wish in mind, A Christmas Story explores the events around Ralphie and his family during a very chaotic and memorable Christmas. Presented less as a linear story and more as a collection of vignettes, this classic Christmas film has been firmly etched into annual television reruns across the United States, due in part to TBS’ annual 24 Hours of A Christmas Story event.
Ralphie Is a Nostalgic Example of Every Kid
Ralphie embodies those Christmas desires that all kids feel at some time in their youth, desiring that one item that will make all their dreams come true. At the same time, the character whose story is told through a narrator gives an oddly nostalgic and intelligent take on a child’s experience during the holidays, making him the ideal Christmas protagonist for those more introverted. For some, calling back to a bygone era, the movie also evokes a certain nostalgia which further adds to the admiration of Ralphie. The sequel, 2022’s A Christmas Story Christmas, is also worth checking out, showing a mature Ralphie played again by actor Peter Billingsley. Stream A Christmas Story on Max.

Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell)
Elf (2003)
Elf is a fun Christmas comedy from the minds of Jon Favreau and David Berenbaum, focused around a human-sized elf working within Santa’s workshop. After discovering that he is a human and not an elf, Buddy (Will Ferrell) leaves the North Pole where he grew up and sets out to find his biological father, Walter Hobbs, who was unaware of his existence. But as he starts to settle in and slowly earns the respect of those around him for his unending optimism, he teaches his family what it means to embody the Christmas spirit just in time to save the holiday.
The Unbridled Optimism of Buddy the Elf
Will Ferrel gives the best comedic performance of all time in a holiday comedy, which says a lot given the abundance of films in the genre. With unending joy and enthusiasm often culminating in humorous situations, it is difficult not to warm up to Buddy’s loud personality. Despite his childish nature, Buddy has a strong sense of knowing right and wrong, trusting in the values of the holiday season to guide him. Elf is a modern classic in every sense of the word, all because of Ferrell’s brilliant performance as Buddy. Stream Elf on Hulu and Max.

The Grinch
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966 and 2000)
Both versions of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, 1966 and 2000, are based on the delightful poem by Dr. Seuss, and follow the same plot of a grumpy creature known as The Grinch who ruins Christmas for the residents of Whoville by stealing all the town’s decorations and gifts. However, when he meets little Cindy-Lou Who and sees her passion for the holiday and acceptance of him, his heart begins to melt, and when the residents of Whoville are undeterred by their lack of presents and decorations, the Grinch finds that his heart grows three times larger, and he embraces the holiday.
The Grinch’s Small Heart Grew Three Sizes That Day
It isn’t easy to pick just one version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with the 1966 version retaining the witty wording of Dr. Seuss throughout the movie, and the 2000 version with Jim Carrey’s iconic performance of the character. Either way, The Grinch is the ultimate Christmas curmudgeon-turned-hero committed to cinema and both versions. The story is solid, and the story casts a powerful spell on the image of holiday jeer-turned-cheer in both renditions, making him one of the most iconic Christmas characters of all time. Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin)
Home Alone (1990)
It’s America’s most popular Christmas movie for a reason. There is just something about the film that has left it’s mark on generations, and shaped the holiday itself. The fun plot, the delightful booby traps and hijinks, the incredible music by John Williams — these are all great, but it’s Macaulay Culkin’s adorable turn as Kevin McCallister that made the movie so undeniably memorable.
The Mischievous Kevin McCallister Is the Most Iconic Christmas Character Ever
A testament to the profound skill of writer John Hughes, the movie indulges in most childlike fantasies of having a house as a playground and indulging in creativity; in this case, to make traps for thieves and defeating them, but the sentiment still resonates. Culkin demonstrates here more than anywhere else why he is one of the most successful and recognizable child actors ever. He brings the snarky and expressive personality to the role that made Kevin McCallister the most iconic Christmas character ever. Stream Home Alone on Disney+.
