Apples Never Fall is Peacock’s new star-studded limited series, with Annette Bening and Sam Neill playing the former owners of a tennis academy who haunt the lives of their grown children, played by Jake Lacy, Essie Randles, Conor Merrigan-Turner, and the one and only Alison Brie. It’s a very dysfunctional family (with a possible murder exposing the rotting secrets within), far from the lovable, relatable, and iconic found family Brie took part in with the modern classic, Community.
The friendship that developed among the cast (give or take one Chevy Chase) has been one of the most heartening and delightful to see in recent sitcom memory. Brie, Chase, Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Nicole Byer, and others formed one of the best comedy ensembles of all time, and the off-screen friendships have been delightful. A pseudo-reunion, in which Alison Brie and Danny Pudi sang along to a Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) song before Joel McHale surprised them from the backseat, was arguably the best episode of Apple TV’s update on Carpool Karaoke.
During MovieWeb’s interview for Apples Never Fall, Brie was kind enough to take a moment and discuss her friendship with Pudi.
“You know, lately, my average hang with Danny is taking a hike,” explained Brie. “We go for a hike in Griffith Park. We meet at Trails Café, get a coffee, we do a big loop and kind of just go. You know Danny’s one of my closest friends. That [Community] cast really did feel like a family, too. I feel like not since Community, and then [Apples Never Fall], felt that same feeling of like an immediate cohesive natural bond.” She continued:
So Danny is like a brother to me, and we truly are just like, ‘What’s going on with you?’ ‘What’s going on with you?’ We hit every aspect of our lives during that hike — work, home, well, not romance, we’re both married. ‘Romance! How’s your marriage!? Anything steamy with your husband or your wife?’ No, it’s not that. It’s the best. I love Danny.

Brie plays Amy Delaney in Apples Never Fall, the oldest daughter in the family. Amy is beautiful and intelligent, but an extremely different person than her competitive and tightly-wound siblings and parents. She wears lots of jewelry and accessories, smokes pot, and organizes a spiritual vigil for a missing person. Ultimately, she’s been spending her adult life trying to believe that she’s worthwhile and doesn’t need to live up to her parents’ standards.
Unlike the other Delaneys, she rarely obfuscates her feelings and embarrassments; like many of us, she broadcasts her issues as a spectator sport. Amy wears her wounds on her sleeves, quite literally with the scars on her forearms. It’s a fantastic character, and Brie is radiant in the role. Like many characters in Apples Never Fall, you just want to give her a hug, but Amy may be the easiest to forgive and love.

“Based on Liane Moriarty’s New York Times bestselling novel, Apples Never Fall centers on the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family. Former tennis coaches Stan and Joy have sold their successful tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives.
“While they look forward to spending time with their four adult children, everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on Joy and Stan’s door, bringing the excitement they’ve been missing. But when Joy suddenly disappears, her children are forced to re-examine their parents’ so-called perfect marriage as their family’s darkest secrets begin to surface.”
