Bruce Campbell Says Talks Have Started for an Evil Dead Animated Series

Bruce Campbell may have made his last appearance as Ash Williams on screen, but he could soon provide his voice to an animated version.

New Line Cinema

Evil Dead Rise will be the first Evil Dead movie in which Bruce Campbell has not appeared on-screen as Ash Williams, the unlucky protagonist of the bulk of the Evil Dead franchise. However, fans who are worried that Ash may have come to the end of the road after Campbell effectively announced his retirement from the role will be pleased to know that a possibly animated Evil Dead series is being discussed.

In something of an ironic parallel, the original Evil Dead trilogy ended after three movies, with Army of Darkness ending on a cliffhanger of Ash waking up after years of an enforced sleep to find he had awakened to a new, apocalyptic world many years in the future. When Ash finally returned in the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead, his adventure lasted three seasons before being canceled when the final episode set up Ash turning up in an apocalyptic future. It’s almost like the character was never meant to make it to that brave new world.

At the end of last year, Campbell hinted that he would consider returning to the role of Ash in animated form, and it looks like there are now some serious discussions being had about a possible Evil Dead animated series going into production. With animation being big business at the moment, it would certainly not be out of place for the Evil Dead to explore this medium and Campbell told Collider that Ash Williams could well be back again. He said:

“You can do the future a lot easier in animation. I still sound like Ash, and you know, my voice hasn’t been as beat up as my body has been so I can still do that crap. So I’ll still do the video game. And we’re already talking about an animated [series].”

Bruce Campbell’s Voice Will Appear In Evil Dead Rise

Despite Bruce Campbell having said he won’t be playing Ash Williams in the flesh anymore, for die-hard fans of the horror franchise, there will only ever be one iconic star of the Evil Dead movies that matters. For that reason, it is just as well that it looks like Campbell has been using his producer credit on Evil Dead Rise, as he recently revealed that as well as adding some original Evil Dead sounds to the new movie, you can also expect to hear some Campbell’s own voice in there too. He told Variety:

“The trick it to try and keep something of the Evil Dead legacy within the filmmaking, so I was there for the post production sound that we did in Europe. So we snuck in a few of the original Evil Dead sound effects from the original movie, because we have them all digital now. So my job is to sneak stuff in and infect his movie with some of the Evil Dead stuff. My voice is in it too.”

Evil Dead Rise is expected to premiere on HBO Max later this year.
