The final entry in the beloved police procedural sitcom was originally supposed to air in 2020 but faced numerous setbacks and delays due to COVID-19, which was heavily incorporated into the season’s storylines. The last installment of the series focuses on the many drastic changes that the precinct has undergone as a result of the pandemic, with Rosa shockingly quitting her job as a detective in favor of becoming a private investigator in the wake of the George Floyd protests and Jake and Amy attempting to navigate their new life as working parents to their son Mac.
Fans & Critics Disagree on Final Entry
The bittersweet season garnered a mixed response from longtime fans, who felt that wholesome comedy and hijinks the series was known for took a backseat to more serious issues and opted to provide political commentary, a switch-up many did not appreciate but critics lauded. In fact, Terry Crews revealed that four episodes were scrapped by producers in light of George Floyd’s murder, leading them to reassess its main premise. Nonetheless, audiences were pleased to see the adored kooky characters receive the proper send-off they deserved after eight seasons and 153 episodes of delivering endless laughter.

Season 6 saw the departure of series regular Chelsea Peretti, who hilariously played Gina Linetti, Captain Holt’s self-obsessed, sardonic assistant who sets out to become an internet celebrity and pursue her big dreams of superstardom. The lovable 99 gang all experience many huge milestones in both their personal and professional lives throughout the installment, as Jake and Amy contemplate having children, Terry sets out to pass the Lieutenant’s exam, and Holt finds himself lost after failing to be elected commissioner.
The Departure of a Prominent Series Regular
The season was the first of the sitcom to air on NBC after it was shockingly canceled by Fox after five seasons, with its passionate fans having rallied to save Brooklyn Nine-Nine via a social media campaign that led to the network sweeping in to pick it up the next day. Though audiences both loved and hated the hilariously sassy character, Peretti leaving the comedy did leave a void behind as her endearing chemistry with Holt and playful banter with Jake and the crew was sorely missed.

By the sophomore season of the smash hit series, the colorful characters had been fully fleshed out and their unique personalities and quirks honed in, and audiences were loving the camaraderie among the cast members. The second installment featured Holt duking it out against his bitter rival Madelyn Wuntch (Kyra Sedgwick), with the two hilariously sharing barbs and brutal insults while showcasing a more laid-back side of the squad’s normally buttoned-up captain (much to the joy of viewers).
‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Finds Its Groove
Watching Captain Holt spectacularly embrace his goofy and playful side was a real treasure for fans to witness, as he became swept up in the squad’s crazy antics and began developing a genuine father/son bond with Jake. Eva Longoria also showed up to cause a snag in the will-they/won’t-they relationship blossoming between Amy and Jake, as the fun-loving detective began a romance with Longoria’s attorney character Sophia and briefly stood in the way of the wholesome crush forming between the stubborn detectives.

Both a knockout with critics and audiences alike, season 4 transported fans down to sunny Florida where Jake and Holt are trying to make the most of their new lives in the witness protection program while they wait for the Nine-Nine to catch Figgis. Back at the precinct, the squad must deal with their dim-witted and incompetent new Captain Jason “C.J.” Stentley (Ken Marino), who causes more harm than good and plays a hand in the gang taking a road trip down south to rescue their beloved missing squad members.
The Hilarious Misadventures of “Larry” & “Greg”
The episodes in which Jake and Holt are posing as “Larry” and “Greg” and both begin working for at a cheesy family fun center known as Fun Zone were an absolute riot, and the appearance of Maya Rudolph as a U.S. Marshal and their case worker was the cherry on top of the amusing storyline. The thrilling season is also entertaining because Jake and Amy evolve in their relationship and move in together after they are eventually able to go back home to New York City, all the while Rosa and Adrian fully commit to their romance and the precinct faces being shut down.
