Everybody Hates Chris Animated Series Gets Central Park Writer Sanjay Shah

It looks like we are headed for another reboot as Everybody Hates Chris is coming back to TV – as an animated show. Yes, it looks like we are now beyond the point of simple reboots and remakes as the autobiographical sitcom is making a transition to a whole new playground. The original show that gave us a first hand look at the childhood of Chris Rock when he believed the world was just really out to get him. Reports have suggested that the new iteration of the show will follow pretty much the same line, with Rock narrating and executive producing.

The news from Deadline notes that Sanjay Shah will write and produce in a side move from a similar role on Apple TV+’s Central Park. Shah has also worked on South Park, King of The Hill and Cougar Town, so has a decent enough resume to draw from in the writing stakes. The series is expected to fall into Paramount+, although there is currently no word on when production will get underway.

While it seems like for every new project announced these days there are several nostalgic properties in the works, hoping to cash in on the previous popularity of programmes and movies from the 80s and 90s. While the success of these reboots is hectically hit or miss, with old fan reactions usually too lost in the love of the original to enjoy more modern updates, and new fans unaware of what all the negativity is about, it looks like Everybody Hates Chris is looking for a double tap of the good stuff by venturing into the increasingly popular animated medium.

Where at one time a cartoon was for kids and that was all she wrote, there has been a massive surge in adult based animations such as Godzilla: Singular Point, Masters of The Universe and Marvel’s What If…? CBS are also not new to turning their franchises into animated form, having already produced Star Trek Lower Decks and the upcoming Star Trek Prodigy. Add these into the long standing likes of South Park, The Simpsons et al, and it is clear to see that there is a big market out there for animation right now.

Everybody Hates Chris told the story of a fictional take on Chris Rock and his life growing up among a community full of very distinct and diverse characters. With Rock on board for this new animated take on the format, it is obvious that we are going to get a similar kind of humor, but it is not yet known whether it will be set in the same time period or if there will be any change to this.

The original series started a regular cast of Tyler James Williams, Terry Crews, Tichina Arnold, Tequan Richmond, and Imani Hakim, and ended with a cliffhanger finale that took its lead from The Sopranos. Whether the new series will resolve that or simple start off completely fresh, we will just need to wait and see when it finally arrives in the next year or so. This news originated at Deadline.
