Fan-Favorite Series Reboot Canceled at Disney+ After Just Two Seasons

Summary

  • Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., the reboot of the classic comedy, has been canceled after just two seasons on Disney+.
  • Disney+ is canceling shows to reduce costs amidst a crisis in maintaining viewership and gaining new subscribers.
  • Other series, such as National Treasure, Willow, and The Mighty Ducks, have also been canceled, and Disney+ has eliminated content from its catalog to cut costs.

Disney+ is ending Doogie Kameāloha’s residency too soon. After just two seasons, the reboot of the classic comedy starring Neil Patrick Harris, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. has been canceled.

The original Doogie Howser, M.D. run for four seasons at ABC, premiering in 1989 and ending in 1993 after 97 episodes. The show starred Harris as a young prodigy that graduates from at medicine school at the age of 14, starting to work as a resident at Eastman Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The reboot, which premiered exclusively on Disney+ back in 2021, starred Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha, another young prodigy trying to balance her life as a teenager and duties as a medical resident.

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. also stars Emma Meisel, Matthew Sato, Wes Tian, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Mapuana Makia, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Jason Scott Lee, Barry Bostwick, Randall Park, Daniel Dae Kim, Ronny Chieng, Alyson Hannigan, Magic Johnson, Margaret Cho and Max Greenfield.

Earlier this year, the show released its second season, and since then Disney had remained tight-lipped over a possible continuation of show. Now, a new report from TVLine reveals that the series has been canceled, which means fans won’t be able to follow the future of Kameāloha.

Disney+ Is Reducing Costs by Canceling Shows

Disney+

Just like every other streaming service and big studio, Disney is going through a crisis. After the pandemic, which allowed streaming platforms to reach impressive numbers thanks to the confinement of Covid lockdown, it became extremely difficult to bring on board new subscribers and maintain the viewership, so many companies are canceling not-so-popular series in order to reduce costs.

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. is not the first, and probably won’t be the last show the House of Mouse has canceled in the last couple of months. Some of the recent victims of the crisis have been the series adaptation of National Treasure, National Treasure: Edge of History, which was created to expand the universe of Nicolas Cage’s movies, joining the sequel that’s been in development for a long time.

Another classic that was turned into a series recently was Willow. The Lucasfilm-produced 1988 epic fantasy drama returned with a sequel show in 2022, but unfortunately it wasn’t as well received as the film, so Disney+ canceled it after just one season.

The Mighty Ducks also returned to the screen with a tv show thanks to the streaming platform, but it was cut after two installments, unable to match the popularity of the movie trilogy from the 90s. Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, and Diary of a Future President were some other victims of Disney’s wave of cancelations.
