Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock made its TV debut 40 years ago, and fans took to social media to celebrate the milestone anniversary.
Dance your cares away! Fraggle Rock celebrates its 40th anniversary, and with the second season of the revival series Fraggle Rock: Back to The Rock, there is plenty to dance about. Jim Henson’s puppet-based series debuted on HBO at 7:30 pm on Jan. 10 and became an instant hit that would see syndication for decades to come. Having already revolutionized the world of puppetry on screen with The Muppet Show and Sesame Street, Henson’s new show delivered a musical series that would stand the test of time and become one of the most loved children’s shows of the 80s.
Fraggle Rock is a series that centers on a group of Muppet characters called Fraggles. The five central characters, Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Red, and Boober, deliver lessons and social commentary for their young audience without patronizing and being heavy-handed, which has helped the show endure through the decades, even though it was canceled in 1987. After reruns aired on numerous networks over the following 30 years, it was during the Covid lockdowns that Fraggle Rock made an unexpected return with a series of short episodes under the title of Fraggle Rock: Rock On! In 2021, Fraggle Rock: Back to The Rock brought the Fraggles back for a full series of songs and adventures, and season 2 is expected to arrive on Apple TV+ this year.

Although there is a belief among many children that anything over a decade old is boring, as a 40-year-old series, Fraggle Rock is as relevant in its messages and advanced in its appearance to stand the test of time. For that reason, bringing Fraggle Rock back for a new series without making too much change to the format or, more importantly, the use of practical puppet effects means that the show’s legacy is now carrying on with the new Apple TV+ series.
Season 2 of Fraggle Rock: Back to The Rock went into production late in 2022 and announced a wave of guest stars for the new episodes. This list includes Ariana DeBose (West Side Story, Schmigadoon!), Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso, Thor: Love and Thunder), and Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, Schitt’s Creek). The synopsis of the season reads:
“Big changes affecting the Rock, the Fraggles, Doozers, and Gorgs, will force them to confront their past and celebrate their interdependence, as they move through challenges together with hope, silliness, and brand new songs, all while dancing their cares away…down at Fraggle Rock.”
There is not yet a premiere date for the new episodes, but with the entire Fraggle Rock back catalog available on Apple TV+, fans can continue to go down to Fraggle Rock and relive some of their classic adventures while they wait.
