The Black-ish spinoff series Grown-ish is soon coming to its conclusion. The first of the Black-ish spinoffs, Grown-ish originally premiered on Freeform in 2018. It was an instant hit with viewers and has remained as such for years, up through its recent fifth season that wrapped up earlier this month. Deadline reports that Freeform will be bringing back the show for a two-part sixth season, though it’s also been announced that season 6 will also be serving as the last for the series.
Some special guest stars have also been revealed to be a part of the show’s final season to help Grown-ish conclude its story. That includes Lil Yachty, Anderson .Paak, and The Free Nationals. They join Yara Shahidi, who leads the cast as Zoey, alongside Marcus Scribner, Trevor Jackson, Diggy Simmons, and Daniella Perkins.
Kenya Barris created the series with Larry Wilmore. Barris also executive produces with Anthony Anderson, Helen Sugland, Julie Bean, Paul Young, Laurence Fishburne, Peter Principato, E. Brian Dobbins, Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry, Craig Doyle, and Courtney Lily.
Grown-ish follows the Johnson family’s children after they leave the family home and head to college. The show changed greatly after the fourth season with much of its characters graduating. The earlier seasons also featured Shahidi and Jackson alongside Deon Cole, Francia Raisa, Emikly Arlook, Jordan Buhat, Chloe Bailey, Halle Bailey, and Luka Sabbat.

Meanwhile, it’s unclear if the Black-ish universe will live on, following show’s first spinoff soon ending. The second spinoff series, Mixed-ish, was canceled after two seasons in 2021. There has been talk of another planned spinoff called Old-ish to be made with Laurence Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis, though the project seems to have fizzled out with no fruitful updates since 2021. Whether another spinoff set in that world will end up making it to the small screen remains to be see, though a new statement from Barris concerning the Grown-ish cancelation seems to suggest that the franchise is concluding as a whole as well.
“We’ve spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the -ish series and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement,” Barris says. “To be able to watch Yara, Marcus and our entire Grown-ish family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor. From the stories we’ve told to the talent we’ve fostered and, most importantly, the memories made, I could not be more proud of everything we’ve accomplished and the -ish family I’ve been a part of.”
Season 6 of Grown-ish will premiere its first half this summer with season 6B set to arrive on Freeform in 2024.
