Jon Favreau reveals how Marvel’s interconnectivity influenced his approach to The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

Marvel Studios

Jon Favreau, the multi-talented writer, director, and actor, has been making waves in Hollywood lately for his contributions to both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars franchise. As a major creative force behind Disney+’s popular series, The Mandalorian, and its spin-off show, The Book of Boba Fett, Favreau has been able to bring his experience working on the MCU to a galaxy far, far away. At a recent fan event in Spain, Favreau shared his insights on how the MCU’s interconnected approach to storytelling has influenced his work on the Star Wars universe, revealing how he learned from the sophisticated audiences that follow the Marvel movies.

According to Favreau, the key to building a successful franchise lies in creating a rich and interconnected universe that keeps fans engaged and excited about what’s to come. He expressed amazement at how audiences followed the MCU’s increasingly complex storyline over time, especially through the Russo Brothers and the latest Avengers films. Favreau noted that the MCU was able to introduce new characters that affected the overarching storyline, such as Captain Marvel and Black Panther, even if they were not part of specific character storylines.

“I was really amazed at how people followed [the MCU] — because I was there for the beginning — but it became incredibly more complex as time went on. All the way up through the Russo Brothers and the latest Avengers films, and what was interesting was that they could do chapters that were not in the specific storylines of the characters that would affect the characters and for the Avengers. So, like, Captain Marvel being introduced, Black Panther being introduced. So I learned a lot by watching how sophisticated the audiences were.”

“And people are very quick to fill each other in” he added. “So I felt that I had the liberty to not spend all the time with [Din Djarin and Grogu] apart in The Mandalorian and spend that time in The Book of Boba Fett as chapters, as though it were a novel [and] they were chapters that dealt with different characters, and everybody seems to follow it.”

The Mandalorian Set to Crossover with Other Star Wars Properties in Its Fourth Season

Disney+

In addition to the news that the fourth season of The Mandalorian is already written, showrunner Jon Favreau hinted at the possibility of a crossover event. In an interview with BFMTV INSIDE, Favreau talked about the interconnected nature of the Star Wars universe and how other shows, such as Ahsoka (which he is producing with writer and showrunner Dave Filoni) and Skeleton Crew, take place in the same time period. He suggested that this shared universe could lead to crossovers between the different shows. This is not the first time that Favreau has hinted at the possibility of crossovers, and it remains to be seen how these different stories will intersect. However, it is an exciting prospect for fans of the Star Wars franchise.

“And then [Dave Filoni’s] doing Ahsoka, which I’m producing with him, but he’s the writer and showrunner on that. And so, to understand what’s happening on other shows or even Skeleton Crew, they all take place in the same Star Wars time period. So, there’s a lot more things that we have to keep in mind and stuff that we’ve built up to from previous seasons of The Mandalorian as well.”

With the third season of The Mandalorian set to premiere in just over a week, fans are eagerly anticipating what adventures await Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his companion Grogu. And now, with the possibility of a crossover event in the next season, excitement for the future of the Star Wars universe is at an all-time high.

The Mandalorian season 3 will premiere on Disney+ on Mar. 1.
