The Conjuring franchise has been pretty reliable at the box office — even the third installment, which had to contend with the COVID-19 pandemic. The series comes to an end (unless it makes a lot of money) with The Conjuring: Last Rites, which kicks off the month of September with a scary-good fright that’s sure to entertain horror movie fans. The marketing has put an emphasis on this being Ed and Lorraine Warren’s last tussle with the supernatural, which adds a sense of urgency — and it looks like that urgency could lead to an impressive opening weekend at the box office.
Per Deadline, The Conjuring: Last Rites entered box office tracking recently with early signs pointing to the film opening between $35-40 million when it hits screens in September. For the Conjuring films, that would put it slightly below the first movie ($41.9 million), should it hit the high end of tracking. Comparing it to The Conjuring 2, if the fourth installment goes high, it would virtually match that film’s $40.4 million opening. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was a special case given the world we were living in at the time. The movie opened in 2021, as movie theaters were trying to get back to business in the wake of the pandemic. The film debuted simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters thanks to a hybrid release pattern for all Warner Bros. movies at the time, and it went on to open to $24 million. Collectively, the Conjuring franchise, not including the universe it helped spawn, has earned $2.2 billion globally against a budget of $208 million across the films.
The Month of September Has Proven to Be a Great Month for Horror at the Box Office
Warner Bros.
September has historically been a good month to open horror films, something that Warner Bros. is already very aware of. The studio launched It: Chapter One over the post-Labor Day weekend to a staggering $123.4 million, an amount that still holds the record for the biggest opening in September. The studio conquered the month again the following year when they released The Nun, a film within the Conjuring universe, to an impressive $53.8 million.
The Conjuring: Last Rites is gaining with its target audience. The trailers released so far have generated interest among the fanbase, and there’s also a desire to have the proper chance to send this franchise off on the big screen, which likely only further excites the fans who’ve made the movies and their slew of spinoffs consistent hits since the saga started in 2013.
Directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, The Conjuring: Last Rites sees Ed and Lorriane Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) embarking on a case so terrifying that it wound up being their very last, according to the based-on-a-true-story marketing. The film also stars Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan and John Brotherton.
