‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ With Henry Cavill in a Villain Role Scores BIg on Paramount+

Henry Cavill turned villain for Tom Cruise’s best Mission: Impossible movie, and now the success of The Final Reckoning in theaters has seen interest in all the previous movies in the franchise soar. While Cruise’s 2024 outing as Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, is obviously charting the highest on Paramount+, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is not far behind.

When Tom Cruise began his journey as Hunt over 30 years ago, the movies performed as well as most other action blockbusters of the time. However, just like the Fast & Furious franchise, something went into overdrive a few movies in, and suddenly Cruise was looking a grosses that had the potential to reach the magic billion-dollar mark. Fallout became both the highest-rated and highest-grossing movie of the franchise, and while it still did not come close to breaking a billion, it set up Cruises next M:I movies. The synopsis of Fallout reads:

“Ethan Hunt and the IMF team join forces with CIA assassin August Walker to prevent a disaster of epic proportions. Arms dealer John Lark and a group of terrorists known as the Apostles plan to use three plutonium cores for a simultaneous nuclear attack on the Vatican, Jerusalem and Mecca, Saudi Arabia. When the weapons go missing, Ethan and his crew find themselves in a desperate race against time to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.”

Henry Cavill’s ‘Mission: Impossible’ Role Led to “Mustache-Gate”

Paramount Pictures

Actors have to make many choices when it comes to how they approach each role in terms of their appearance. Some actors will shave their head rather than wear a bald cap. Others will undergo dramatic weight loss or gain in order to embody the character they are playing, while others rely on VFX and bodysuits. When starring in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Cavill grew a mustache. Naturally, this would not have been an issue at all if he had not been required to return to the set of Justice League to complete reshoots for his role as Superman.

This led to Cavill’s reshot scenes needing digital enhancement to remove his upper lip hair, and created a whole wave of criticism when Justice League was released, with several scenes being pointed out by fans on social media, and some people even going so far as to manipulate footage from the film to reinstate his mustache just for the fun of it.

Of course, this was the least of Justice League’s issues, and while the DC event movie became the beginning of a very long end of the DCEU, Cavill’s adjacent appearance in Fallout became his second-highest-grossing movie behind Batman v Superman, and the highest-rated project of his career.

Now, thanks to the release of The Final Reckoning over Memorial Day weekend, many fans are revisiting Fallout on Paramount+, giving it a strong run on the streamer’s movie chart. There are worse ways to spend this weekend than checking it out for yourself.
