On the 2023 BAFTA awards’ red carpet, Jodie revealed that Gatwa Ncuti invited her to join Sex Ed’s upcoming season.

Sex Education‘s upcoming season will release in mid to late 2023, with new cast members, including Jodie Turner-Smith, who confirmed the news and spoke more about her experience on the show at the BAFTA Film Awards today (via Variety). Turner-Smith said that she decided to join the cast of the popular Netflix show after Ncuti Gatwa, one of the show’s prominent characters, contacted her and asked her to join.
“You may or may not see me in a little Netflix show called Sex Education,” said the British actress to reporters on the red carpet in London.
“First of all, all my scenes were with Ncuti Gatwa who – I DIE for him – and he’s my favorite character on the show,”
She added:
“So when he called me and asked me to do it I was like, I don’t care how much they’re paying I’m doing.”
Turner-Smith also confirmed that Gatwa had personally called and invited her to join the show.

Sex Education Gets a Fourth Season
With a fourth season coming soon, the Netflix show tells the story of a socially awkward high schooler, Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), whose mother is a sex therapist. As a boy who grew up surrounded by manuals, clips, and conversations about sex, Otis takes advantage of his knowledge on the subject to benefit himself at school. Otis and his friend Maeve (Emma Mackey) launch an undercover sex therapy clinic to help their classmates with their problems. Otis soon realizes that he might need some therapy himself.
The upcoming season of the Netflix show began shooting last summer. Gatwa, who plays the role of Eric, is a major character in the TV series and is Otis’ gay best friend who comes from a Nigerian/Ghanaian family. Other new cast members joining the series include Dan Lecy, Thaddea Graham, Marie Reuther, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, and Imani Yahshua.
After getting the role of Eric in the show, Gatwa earned different roles in other big films and series, including Doctor Who and Barbie, which will release in July 2023. However, other original cast members who won’t be on the new season of the show include Simone Ashley (Olivia), Tanya Reynolds (Lily), Patricia Allison (Ola), and Rakhee Thakrar (Emily Sands).
The 76th version of the British Academy Film Awards is taking place in London, featuring films like Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Banshees of Inisherin.
