Netflix Stranger Things Season 4 Event Sees Real Rifts Open Worldwide

As Netflix promotes the release of Stranger Things season 4, rifts will open worldwide at various locations.

Netflix

On Tuesday, Netflix began releasing mysterious coordinates for a global event to promote the release of Stranger Things season 4. The post reads, “Something big is coming. Find your city, and that’s where we’ll be.” Well, now we finally know what those coordinates mean. Thanks to an exclusive report from IGN, we know that the coordinates are locations for rifts that will open to the Upside Down. Rifts are a portal to the Upside Down, once used by Eleven during an experiment in which she made contact with an inter-dimensional creature, the Demogorgon.

For the sake of the Netflix promotion, the “rifts” we will be seeing are constructed using custom light technology which will project onto several iconic landmarks. The event will take place over 15 iconic locations in 14 countries starting on May 26th. Some sites that will be included are the Empire State Building in New York City, The Gateway of India in Mumbai, and the Xbox Plaza in Los Angeles. For a complete list of coordinates, you can view the thread here. The experience at the Empire State Building will last for 15 minutes, with the mysterious clock counting down until 8:45 pm ET. Following the countdown, a rift to the Upside Down will appear, showing previous moments from the series and storylines from season 4 that we have yet to see.

Gearing Up For Stranger Things Season 4

Netflix

Netflix has been ramping up the marketing ahead of the release of the new Stranger Things season, which is a crucial time for the company. Last month, reports surfaced that Netflix planned to crack down on password sharing after losing 200,000 subscribers. They will surely be hoping to get their subscriptions up again, as Stranger Things is one of the most successful Netflix shows of all time. In addition, the final season’s length will be unparalleled, with the last episode of the series clocking in at two and a half hours. The first 8 minutes of Stranger Things season 4 are available to watch now, with the latest trailer below.

Stranger Things season 4 will be releasing in two volumes, with Volume One dropping on Netflix on May 27th and Volume Two arriving shortly after that on July 1st.
