Netflix’s ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Slays Critics on Rotten Tomatoes

Netflix‘s newest fantasy action movie hit the streaming service today, and if its Rotten Tomatoes score is any indication, it’s definitely one that’s worth your time this weekend – especially if you enjoyed the animation style of the Spider-Verse movies. Titled KPop Demon Hunters, the Sony animated release is a big hit with critics, as is evident by its 92% rating. Some have even gone so far as to call it “one of the most visually interesting movies of 2025.”

Perhaps the best part of all is that you don’t have to be a fan of K-pop music to enjoy this one; you just have to be a fan of great storytelling and animation. That’s according to critic Wendy Lee Szany from The Movie Couple, who said, “Whether or not you’re a K-Pop fan, you will be entertained.” She would go on to add that it’s filled with “great animation, characters, music, and story.” Brian Orndorf from Blu-ray.com was another one who had high praise for Netflix’s latest, highlighting its “lively” animation:

“Outsiders might be a bit more bewildered with the particulars of this story, but the basics in struggle and sensitivity are noted, and the animation remains lively, keeping the endeavor moving forward with energetic visuals and pop star sheen.”

Starring Arden Cho as the voice of Rumi – the leader of the K-pop band, Helix – KPop Demon Hunters follows her and her bandmates, Mira and Zoey, as they use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from supernatural threats. When an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise comes on the scene, they must work together to take down their biggest enemy yet. Sounds like a lot of fun, right? It is, as Sherin Nicole from Riotus notes in their review:

“K-pop Demon Hunters is a bias-wrecking K-Pop-Drama with all the fandom-fever we live for, but in a Spider-verse studio animation.”

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Blends Korean Mythology and the Sounds of K-Pop To Create an “Irreverently Fun” Movie

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters sprung from Kang’s longing to create something that would draw on her Korean roots. As such, she took elements from mythology, demonology, and K-pop, put them in a blender, and out came Netflix’s newest hit animated movie. Also starring Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, the leader of Helix’s rival boy band, critic Casey Chong called it “an irreverently fun and visually dazzling animation,” while Jack Martin from Film Feeder also had nothing but good things to say about the movie, despite it’s “silly” plot:

“KPop Demon Hunters overcomes its silly and slightly superficial premise with a fun and engaging energy that’s brought to life by beautifully designed animation, charming characters and some truly catchy K-Pop bangers.”

Of course, the movie does have its detractors, like critic Mark Dujsik, who said that “in its quest to be about something ‘real,’ the movie loses its sense of genuine fun.” That being said, he seems to be the only dissenting voice right now, as most critics agree that KPop Demon Hunters is a fun ride with a “beautifully bonkers fantasy premise that works,” as Jeff Ewing from Collider said. That could change as the weekend progresses and more critics chime in with their reviews, but for now, it’s safe to say that the film is a great way to spend 95 minutes of your time.

KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netlix from Sony Pictures Animation.
