Paul Wight Returns as The Waterboy Character Captain Insano on AEW Dynamite

Bobby Boucher would have been very excited if he was watching AEW Dynamite on Wednesday evening. On the Nov. 16 episode, wrestler and actor Paul Wight, formerly known as WWE’s Big Show, popped up in a segment wearing some very familiar ring gear. Though Wight has since shaved his head and grew out his beard, fans of The Waterboy should still be able to recognize him as Captain Insano, personal hero to Adam Sandler’s titular character in The Waterboy.

On Dynamite, Captain Insano’s cameo came at the start of a music video debuted by the tag team The Acclaimed. The song was made as a “diss track,” taking shots at rival wrestlers Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee. It begins with the two watching television where they see Wight as Captain Insano conducting a backstage interview. Fully in character as Captain Insano, Wight takes aim at two other AEW wrestlers, Austin and Colten Gunn, aka the “Ass Boys.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“You can bet one thing: Captain Insano is gonna show no mercy when it comes to the Ass Boys!” the pro wrestler shouts.

In The Waterboy, Bobby Boucher calls Captain Insano during a televised wrestling program to offer his services as a waterboy; it results in the wrestler laughing hysterically once learning how old Bobby really is. The new Dynamite segment has The Acclaimed similarly calling Captain Insano to ask him about the statistical probability of their team losing. Like in the film, Captain Insano and his interviewers roar with laughter.

Will Captain Insano Wrestle in AEW?

Captain Insano didn’t take to the ring in his AEW debut, but that doesn’t mean fans won’t get to actually see him wrestler. Wight has previously teased the arrival of Captain Insano and has suggested that he’s going to perform in the ring as the character as part of his “last hurrah” as a wrestler. So fans should be able to finally see the wrestler from The Waterboy actually participate in a match on TV.

“He’ll [Captain Insano] be back,” Wight told Wrestling Inc. in July, revealing that AEW had gotten the rights to use the character. “The guy who wrote The Waterboy has approved. Tony Khan and I have secured the rights to Captain Insano. There’s already an outfit made, the whole nine yards. We’re doing a lot of prep work, and this will be my last hurrah so to speak.”

Wight is not expecting to win the championship but only to have fun, however, as he added, “Let’s be honest – I don’t think this character is going to be a killer going out there trying to beat Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship. At this point, I think this character is just to have fun. We’ll see how it goes, but for me right now, this is just a chance to have fun with this character and be a bright spot on the show.”
