Considering how the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise almost skidded to a halt thanks to its “ugly Sonic” design, the little blue critter is now one of Paramount’s biggest hits. It seems that the new Knuckles spin-off series is about to continue that success, as the recently released trailer for the series broke a Paramount+ record.
“Only one hero hits this hard,” declares the first trailer for Knuckles, and it wasn’t lying. The trailer gained a total of 4.3 million views on YouTube alone in its first 24 hours, with Paramount+ declaring it their biggest original programming debut ever for a trailer. Starring Idris Elba as the titular warrior echidna, reprising the role after debuting as the Sega character in 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the series will follow the beloved Knuckles on his own adventure as he settles on planet Earth…and looks for battles wherever he can find them.

The Knuckles spinoff will take place between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the upcoming sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 3, with an official logline revealing that the series will follow Knuckles as he “agrees to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.”

The Sonic the Hedgehog TV spinoff will star several A-list actors alongside Idris Elba. The spinoff’s ensemble cast includes Cary Elwes, Stockard Channing, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel. This is on top of the already stacked cast, with Idris Elba (leading the show as Knuckles) and Adam Pally (reprising his role as Wade Whipple from the film franchise). The cast also includes recurring and guest stars such as Edi Patterson, Julian Barratt, Scott Mescudi, Ellie Taylor, Rory McCann, and Tika Sumpter, reprising her role as Maddie.
Notably, the creative team from the previous films is returning for Knuckles. Jeff Fowler, the director of the films, will be directing the pilot episode. The executive producers for the series are Fowler, Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, John Whittington, Toru Nakahara, and Idris Elba. Directors Ged Wright, Brandon Trost, Jorma Taccone, and Carol Banker will also be contributing to the series.
John Whittington, Brian Schacter, and James Madejski will form the writing team. Whittington, who has previously worked on Sonic the Hedgehog, will be the head writer. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has enjoyed commercial success. The sophomore effort from the franchise managed to earn $405.4 million in global sales. The film is also one of the most re-watched movies in the Paramount+ platform.
In the series, the audience will be watching the humorous and action-filled journey of Knuckles as he trains Wade Whipple to become an echidna warrior. The series will fill in the gap between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The latest movie is already slated to hit the screens on December 20, 2024.
