Shark movies are a breed of their own. Ever since Steven Spielberg turned many people off beach holidays, filmmakers have constantly attempted to keep the fear of sharks alive, with varying results. From the simple premise of Open Water, to the bonkers insanity of Sharknado and its many sequels, spinoffs and ripoffs, there is no denying that shark movies have their own place in the world. Now Frozen (not that one) and Hatchet director Adam Green
is about to make everyone afraid to go to a wedding.
As reported by Deadline, The Ascent is described as following “a group of friends who arrive in Europe for a glamorous but daring destination wedding. The fun and games turn into a nightmare when they find themselves precariously suspended above shark-infested waters and in a battle for survival.” All sounds plausible and standard stuff, right?
The film is set to be the first movie on a new slate from Simple House Films. One of the owners, Volodymyr Artemenko said of the project, “We are thrilled to have a platform to produce and deliver important stories to audiences and work with talented and creative individuals across the industry. We are thrilled at the opportunity to launch an international sales unit into the marketplace and work alongside Anastazja Bankowska with the goal of delivering high-quality theatrical films to the marketplace’s global audience.”
Whether a shark infested wedding movie is an important story is something that we will not find out just yet, as so far there has been no casting information or a potential release date revealed. However, it is nice to know that sharks will be coming to a wedding breakfast near you sometime in the next year or so.
Sharks Are Big Business
The horror genre is littered with certain themes and subjects that are constantly being reworked and reimagined in a variety of ways…for better or worse. While evil clowns, hauntings, and violent death scenes are always somewhere on the horizon, there is never much time between shark movies either.

Best Shark Attack Movies (That Aren’t Jaws)
Jaws might be the most famous shark attack movie franchise, but there have been many other notable related movies made.
Last year, Netflix delivered a huge streaming win with the French movie Under Paris, which asked what would happen if a shark invaded the River Seine. Although the movie did come under some criticism for its occasionally ropey CGI and completely over-the-top story, it found a fan in horror author Stephen King, who highly recommended it to his many followers on social media, and millions of Netflix subscribers. This pushed the film to become one of the biggest movies to ever hit the streaming platform in a matter of weeks.
With The Ascent, it seems that fans of shark movies will be able to continue their love affair of the horror subgenre, as even without knowing much at all about the film, the simple idea of a wedding party going wrong thanks to a bunch of sharks is exactly the kind of bizarre premise that will get it noticed. Expect to find out more about this one in the not too distant future.
