Antony Starr might be tearing up the small screen right now as Homelander in the hit Prime Video series The Boys, but early on in his career there was a small chance that he could have been James Bond. A tape of him reading for the role made the rounds on social media back in February, and now Starr is speaking out about the experience, calling it one of the “worst” auditions ever.
Appearing on Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, Starr – who returns as Homelander in The Boys’ final season next year – talked about his failed James Bond audition, saying that at the time, it was the best he could do. It came around Casino Royale, when Daniel Craig was also in the running to play 007, so really, there was but a tiny chance Starr would’ve even been seriously considered for the part.
“My metaphor for that was like throwing a baitless hook into a very large pond, knowing you’re not gonna catch the fish. I’ve seen it. That was when Daniel Craig was getting it. They were just dragnetting the globe, and I was just one of the little minnows somewhere in there that got caught in the net. It was a bit surreal. It came out of the blue, and I sort of went in and did that reading. It’s not very good, but it’s reflective of where I was at.”

Antony Starr is determined to prove once and for all that his character in ‘The Boys’ is more than an extended Donald Trump metaphor.
As for that audition tape of a fresh-faced Starr that was released on social media? While everyone seemed to like it, Starr said he “doesn’t know how to feel about that coming out.” “It’s very strange that they even let it out,” he added. “It doesn’t bother me, really. We all start somewhere, so it is what it is. It is one of the worst readings of ‘Bond. James Bond’ you’ll ever see.”
Could Antony Starr Be the Next James Bond?
Prime Video
With Amazon MGM now taking over full creative control of the James Bond franchise, fans are collectively holding their breath waiting to find out who will be the next actor to portray the iconic character. Everyone from Joe Alwyn to Jack Lowden has been in the conversation, with the clear fan-favorite being Henry Cavill. Amazon has given no indication that they’re close to making a decision, despite reports that the next Bond film will be released in 2027.
Could Starr be one of the contenders now that he’s got a couple of more decades of experience under his belt? “I’m good,” the 49-year-old actor said, adding that he’s had his fill of action roles.
“I see that action in those things and I listen to Daniel Craig talk about the commitment to it, and whilst I admire that commitment, and I’m not afraid of a commitment like that… my body, after doing Banshee as well, I know what those fight scenes take. I know the deal, a little bit, and it’s a lot. It’s a drag. That’s a young man’s game. A younger man than I.”
As we wait to find out who the next Bond will be, you can currently catch Starr in Seasons 1 to 4 of The Boys streaming now on Prime Video, and look for the fifth and final season to debut in 2026. Before we get there, though, Starr will appear next in the thriller G20, which will also stream on Prime starting April 10.
